Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

The song 'Ennuyirae' (from Uyire / Dil Se..) revolves around the Arabic/Sufi concept of the Seven Stages of Love (Hubb, Uns, Ishq, Aqidat, Ibadat, Junoon, and Maut / Death/Rebirth). Lyricist Vairamuthu ingeniously adapts these Sufi stages of love into Tamil poetic verse, tracing the lovers' journey through eye contact, attraction, physical affection, devotion, complete surrender, and blissful madness. Throughout the track, the lover expresses complete devotion, describing how love strips away ego and self-awareness, leaving the soul intertwined with the beloved. Cosmic imagery—such as the sun and moon perishing while the light of love illuminates the earth—emphasizes the eternal and transcendent nature of their bond.

Poetic devices

Metaphor (Uvamanai)

Kadhalar kangalae chandhiran sooriyan aagatho

Comparing lovers' eyes to the sun and moon ('Kadhalar kangalae chandhiran sooriyan aagatho') to symbolize eternal brightness and guidance.

Hyperbole (Uyarvu Navortchi Ani)

Sooriyan chandhiran veezhnthazhinthu poividinum / Nam kadhalilae varum jothiyilae intha bhoomiyilae oli Koottiduvom

Exaggeration that even if the sun and moon perish, the light from their love will illuminate the entire world.

Edhai / Rhyme (Monnai / Edhugai)

Kaigal naangum theendum munnae / Kangal naangum theendidumae

Use of second-letter rhyming ('Kaigal' and 'Kangal', 'Udal' and 'Uyir') common in classical Tamil prosody.

Trivia

This track corresponds to 'Satrangi Re' from the Hindi original movie 'Dil Se..' (1998) composed by A.R. Rahman. Both Mani Ratnam and lyricists (Gulzar in Hindi, Vairamuthu in Tamil) structured the song around the ancient Sufi concept of the 7 stages of love: Hubb (Attraction), Uns (Attachment), Ishq (Love), Aqidat (Trust/Trustworthiness), Ibadat (Worship), Junoon (Madness), and Maut (Death/Loss of Self).
