Husband, are you a murderer?
Did you kill the king?
Tell me, husband, tell me!
The happiness of an peerless, chaste wife—
I am the one who killed it.
The thoughts that surged in her heart—
I am the one who killed them.
A woman worthy of a good life,
Leaving her unable to live,
Because of a ruinous courtesan, my own character—
I am the one who killed it.
I have become the cause of those murders;
No matter what murder I commit now...
What is it, my wise woman?
What is it, my wise woman?
What is it, my wise woman?

Husband, husband, a cruel blame

you have love for me, speak the truth fearlessly!

Husband, what terrible mistake did you commit
that prevents you from speaking the truth?

The One who gave me vision,
plucked it back away, my deer-like girl!
The One who nurtured me has forsaken me!
The One who gave me eyes,
plucked them back away, my deer-like girl!
The One who nurtured me has forsaken me!
Despite having a suitable companion,
and despite her overflowing beauty,
I allowed my gaze to wander wherever it pleased.
He waited patiently
and accomplished his work!
Despite having a suitable companion,
and despite her overflowing beauty,
I allowed my gaze to wander wherever it pleased.
He waited patiently
and accomplished his work!

The One who nurtured me has forsaken me!
Did God, the very embodiment of mercy,
snatch away your eyes?
An enemy did not come and ruin me;
my own heart gave no room to temptation.
An enemy did not come and ruin me;
my own heart gave no room to temptation.
From somewhere, He set loose a parrot;
and it cast the blame right on my head!
The One who gave me eyes,
plucked them back away, my deer-like girl!
The One who nurtured me has forsaken me!
So that justice prevails and the vermilion on my forehead shines,
speak the truth!
Your wife is asking you;
my marital symbols—turmeric and vermilion—
are asking you, husband!
For a sinner who lost his virtue lured by beauty and landed in prison,
why does he need a family life, my dear? Why family life?
For a sinner who lost his virtue lured by beauty and landed in prison,
why does he need a family life, my dear? Why family life?
For a sinner who lost his virtue lured by beauty and landed in prison,
why does he need a family life, my dear? Why family life?
For one who wandered forgetting his wife and child,

it is wrong to bless him!
For one who wandered forgetting his wife and child,
it is wrong to bless him; he should not be forgiven!
For a sinner who lost his virtue lured by beauty and landed in prison,
why does he need a family life, my dear? Why family life?

Vaazhthuvadhu aagathadhadi
For one who wandered forgetting his wife and child,
Mainiviyai kuzhandhaiyai marandhu thirindhavanai
it is wrong to bless him; he should not be forgiven!
Vaazhthuvadhu aagathadhadi mannikka koodathadi
For a sinner who lost his virtue lured by beauty and landed in prison,
Singaaram kettu siraipatta paavikku
why does he need a family life, my dear? Why family life?
Samsaaram yedhukkadi thangam samsaaram yedhukkadi
Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
This poignant musical dialogue from Thanga Padhumai captures a tragic confrontation between a guilt-ridden husband (played by Sivaji Ganesan, voiced/sung by C. S. Jayaraman) and his devoted wife (played by Padmini). The husband laments how his moral straying and infatuation with a courtesan destroyed his wife's happiness and ruined his character. He views his physical blindness and imprisonment as divine punishment for straying from his righteous path and abandoning his marital duties.
