Embrace me tightly

The condition of my longing heart
Is my suffering not obvious to you?
The condition of my longing heart
Is my suffering not obvious to you?
Without speaking joyfully in front of me
Is it right to remain like this?
Without speaking joyfully in front of me
Is it right to remain like this?
Oh my, oh my! What on earth is this?
Some severe illness seems to have struck!
Let father come; I will check your pulse
And buy and bring you medicine
It cannot be cured by medicine
This illness called desire
It cannot be cured by medicine
This illness called desire
That is why I told you
You are the companion to my soul
That is why I told you
You are the companion to my soul
Like a guard soldier standing by as a companion
Do I look like that when you look at me?
Without causing trouble
Without arguing back
Why don't you just get lost?

Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
This classic comedic duet from the 1941 movie Ashok Kumar features a humorous exchange between a lover expressing intense romantic longing and her witty partner who playfully deflects her advances. The heroine insists that having been touched, she belongs to him and demands that he embrace her and tie the sacred knot (Thaali). She describes her romantic yearning as a deep state of mind that causes her emotional suffering.
