Haa…aa…haa…
Ha... aa... ha... aa...
Ha... aa... aa... ha... ha...
She gave her heart to Nala,
surrendering it completely,
that noble Damayanthi.
Yet before the Swayamvaram (groom-choosing ceremony) is held,
isn't this a wondrous sight?
The four gods from heaven,
seeking this earth to find
what is in this maiden's heart and test her,
come rushing here!
Ha... aa... aa... ha...
"Long live King Nala! We are Indra, lord of the heavens,
and Varuna, Agni, and Yama!"
"I am blessed! Whatever the gods command,
I shall fulfill it with utmost honor."
"Persuade Damayanthi to place her garland
upon one of us four handsome gods!"
"To convey the words of the king of gods without fail,
entering the fair lady's inner chambers will not be easy."
"When you go as a messenger of the gods,
why doubt yourself or lose your courage?
If you place this upon your head,
your form will become invisible.
Do not hesitate, go swiftly!"
Ha... aa... aa... ha...
Ha... aa... aa... ha...
"Seeking the inner palace without permission,
who has come here without any fear? Ha... aa..."
"Seeking the inner palace without permission,
who has come here without any fear?"
"Sent by Indra and Agni,
Lord Yama and Varuna—
I am their messenger, King Nala.
You must choose one of them with love, O beautiful one,
as your bridegroom.
O girl, you must accept one as your husband."
"Ever since the swan's message,
I have set my heart only on you;
even if the whole universe changes, will I ever change?"
"Even if you marry me and rejoice in love,
won't trouble from the gods fall upon you?"
"Turning all trouble into joy, with a tender heart,
and accepting everything with love,
I shall eagerly place the wedding garland upon you alone...
Place the garland upon you alone!
No matter how many lives I may take,
isn't Nala alone my husband?
While this humble girl's heart aches,
isn't putting me through this test unfair?
So that truth stands firm and the world respects it,
and so we may live as husband and wife,
shed your disguise this very moment so I may see my husband,
please show me your grace!"
Ha... aaaa... aa...
Ha... aa... ha...

Beyond the translation

Overall song meaning

This musical sequence depicts a pivotal episode from the classic epic tale of Nala and Damayanthi. The song opens with the gods (Indra, Agni, Varuna, and Yama) deciding to test Damayanthi's devotion. They approach King Nala and instruct him to act as their messenger to ask Damayanthi to choose one of the divine beings at her Swayamvaram. To help him infiltrate her secure inner chambers, they grant him a magical cloak of invisibility. Upon entering, Nala reveals his identity and delivers the gods' message. Damayanthi firmly rejects marrying a deity, declaring that ever since she heard of Nala through the sacred swan, her heart belongs solely to him. When the gods disguise themselves as clones of Nala at the ceremony, Damayanthi prays fervently for divine intervention to identify her true love, reaffirming her eternal fidelity across lifetimes.

Writing craft

Poetic devices

Emonai (Second-letter Rhyme)

Andhapuram naadi anumadhi illaamal / Anjaamal vandhadhaaroo

Repetition of the second letter consonant 'n' across lines like 'Andhapuram' and 'Anjaamal' enhances rhythmic flow.

Edhugai (Initial Rhyme / Alliteration)

Amaryendhiran agniyum / Anupiya thoodhanaam nalaraajanae

Use of matching initial consonants 'A' across consecutive lines (Amaryendhiran / Anupiya / Avargalil).

Rhetorical Question

Sodhanai seivadhum aneedhiyandro

The singer uses rhetorical questions ('Is it not unjust to test me further?') to emphasize Damayanthi's emotional plea and unwavering resolve.
