Without nectar-filled flowers blooming,
The peacock-dancing grove holds no beauty.
Joyfully dancing and forming sweet bonds in the heart,
The spring season has not arrived at all.
In an unseasonable, unexpected time,
Why is the cuckoo bird singing?
At an untimely hour,
Why is the state of things changing?
In an unseasonable, unexpected time,
Why is the cuckoo bird singing?
The surge of love overflowing into a melody
Speaks through this veena.
Because you caught sight of your beloved lover,
Your heart itself transformed into the spring season.
In an unseasonable, unexpected time,
That is why the cuckoo bird is singing!
At an untimely hour,
That is why the state of things is changing!
In an unseasonable, unexpected time,
That is why the cuckoo bird is singing!
Crawling alongside the radiance of matchless stars,
The night has not arrived yet.
Swimming and playing across the blue sky,
The bright moon has not arrived yet.
In an unseasonable, unexpected time,
Why has the moon arrived?
At an untimely hour,
Why is the state of things changing?
In an unseasonable, unexpected time,
Why has the moon arrived?
Thinking that cherished thoughts will turn sweet,
The heart overflows, forgetting itself.
For young maiden girls who dream every day,
The beloved lover himself becomes the bright white moon.
In an unseasonable, unexpected time,
That is why the moon arrived!
At an untimely hour,
That is why the state of things is changing!
In an unseasonable, unexpected time,
That is why the moon arrived!
Madhuvaedhum malargalum malaramalae

Thinking that cherished thoughts will turn sweet,
Thannai marandhae ullam pongidudhae
The heart overflows, forgetting itself.
Kanavae dhinam kaanum kanni pengalukkae
For young maiden girls who dream every day,
Kaadhalanae venn nilavum aavaan
The beloved lover himself becomes the bright white moon.
Kaalamillaadha kaalathilae

Nilavum vandhadhu adhanaale

Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
This delightful duet from Kadan Vangi Kalyanam (1958) is structured as a musical conversation between two companions. One singer expresses wonder at natural phenomena happening out of their usual time, such as a cuckoo singing before spring or the moon shining bright prematurely, questioning why nature is acting so unusually. The second singer answers these queries with romantic philosophy, explaining that love alters all perception. Seeing one's beloved turns the mind into spring and makes the lover appear as the bright moon, causing the heart to overflow with joy and nature itself to seem enchanted.
