Naan pootta kaadhal koolamPattern of love in rangoli,
Oru paathi mudiyum munnaBefore even half of it was completed,
Alichiruchu kaalam kaalamTime erased it completely.
Innoru jenmam naan marupadi poranthu vanthuIf I am born again in another life,
Unakkaga kaathiruppen …I will be waiting for you...

Porakkamal poyiduven……I will simply cease to be born again...

Theppa kulathil padincha paasi …The moss settled in a temple tank,
Kallerincha kallaiyum… kallaiyumWill scatter if a stone is thrown...
Nenja kulathil padincha kaadhalBut the love settled in the heart's pond,
Entha neruppil eriyum… eriyumIn which fire can it ever burn away?
Nee pona paatha mela…Along the path you walked...
Sarukaga kadantha sugamaWas it pleasant to pass like dry leaves?
Unnoda nyaabagam ellaamAll your memories...
Manasukkulla irukkum ranamaAre an unhealing wound inside my heart.
Kattu kaaval meeri varaTo break past all strict barriers,

Manasukulla pooti marachaIf you locked it inside your heart and hid it,
Apo yethuku veliyila sirichaThen why did you smile on the outside?
Kanavukulla oodi pudichaYou played chase inside my dreams,
Nesathulla than thayanghi nadichaYet hesitated when showing real affection.

Nee iruntha manasa alliGathering this heart where you once resided,
Entha theeyil nanum podaInto which fire should I cast it?
Unnai enna ketukita kaadhal nenja thatichuThe loving heart that pleaded with you is now thumping in despair.

Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

This poignant song depicts a lover's intense grief, eternal devotion, and feelings of betrayal after a failed relationship. The protagonist compares his love to an elaborate, multi-dotted 'kolam' (rangoli) that time cruelly wiped away before it could be completed. He vows to wait for his beloved even in a future birth, adding that if fate separates them again, he would prefer non-existence over living without her.

Writing craft

Poetic devices

Metaphor (Uruvagam)

Naan pootta kaadhal koolam

Compares love to a complex 'koolam' (rangoli pattern) and the heart to a temple tank ('nenja kulam').

Hyperbole (Uyarvu Navitchi)

Oru koodi pulli vacha

Exaggerates the grand effort of love by referencing a kolam made with 'a crore of dots' (oru koodi pulli).

Contrast / Imagery

Theppa kulathil padincha paasi ...

Juxtaposes physical moss in a pond that can be cleared by throwing a stone against deep love in the heart that no fire can burn away.
