| En raasaththi kiliyae | Oh my queen-like parrot, |
| Raasaaththi kiliyae | My queen-like parrot, |
| Naanthaan naalellaam | I was the one, all these days, |
| Thavamirundhen | Who waited earnestly as if performing penance. |
| Naan nambi kedandhadhellaam | Everything I believed in so deeply, |
| Nambaliyo manasu | Did your heart fail to believe it? |
| Ippo vembi vadhangudhadi | Now it is scorching and wilting away, |
| Verum sarugaa ponadhadi | It has turned into mere dry withered leaves, |
| Thembum koranjadhadi | My strength and courage have drained away, |
| Dhesaiyellaam maarudhadi | All directions seem to be shifting. |
| Male | |
| Nee oru nimisham | If you, for just a single minute, |
| Kaathirundhaa | Had waited for me, |
| Un kazhuthil en thaali | My sacred thread would be around your neck. |
| Othukitttu nee irundhaa | If you had accepted and stayed by my side, |
| Odaiyumadi perum veali | This massive barrier would have broken down. |
| Male | |
| En chinna pasungiliyae | Oh my little green parrot, |
| Chithiramae rathinamae | Oh beautiful painting, oh precious gem, |
| Enna thavikkavittu | Leaving me here to suffer in agony, |
| Eppadi thaan vaazhuviyo | How will you ever manage to live? |
| Kannakadhuppu kullae | Within the softness of your cheek, |
| Kaanaama ena tholaichen | I lost myself without a trace. |
| Ennathaan meettu thara | To retrieve my lost self and give it back, |
| Endha saami varangodukkum | Which god will grant a blessing? |
| Endha saami varangodukkum | Which god will grant a blessing? |

| Nee oru nimisham | If you, for just a single minute, |

| Male | |
| En saadhi sanam thaduthirundhaa | If my caste people and relatives had stood in my way, |
| Sathiyamaa konnuruppen | I swear I would have killed them, |
| Modhi sanda pottupputtu | Or clashing and fighting fiercely with them, |
| Moochadakki poyiruppen | I would have lost my breath and died. |
| Paavi magalae nee | You sinful girl, |
| Paadhiyilae konnupputta | You killed me halfway through life. |
| Aavi thudikkudhadi | My spirit is writhing in pain, |
| Aththanaiyum andhadhadi | Everything has come to an end, |
| Aththanaiyum andhadhadi | Everything has come to an end. |
Oh my queen-like parrot,
My queen-like parrot,
I was the one, all these days,
Who waited earnestly as if performing penance.
Everything I believed in so deeply,
Did your heart fail to believe it?
Now it is scorching and wilting away,
It has turned into mere dry withered leaves,
My strength and courage have drained away,
All directions seem to be shifting.
If you, for just a single minute,
Had waited for me,
My sacred thread would be around your neck.
If you had accepted and stayed by my side,
This massive barrier would have broken down.
Oh my little green parrot,
Oh beautiful painting, oh precious gem,
Leaving me here to suffer in agony,
How will you ever manage to live?
Within the softness of your cheek,
I lost myself without a trace.
To retrieve my lost self and give it back,
Which god will grant a blessing?
Which god will grant a blessing?
If you, for just a single minute,
Had waited for me,
My sacred thread would be around your neck.
If you had accepted and stayed by my side,
This massive barrier would have broken down.
If my caste people and relatives had stood in my way,
I swear I would have killed them,
Or clashing and fighting fiercely with them,
I would have lost my breath and died.
You sinful girl,
You killed me halfway through life.
My spirit is writhing in pain,
Everything has come to an end,
Everything has come to an end.
En raasaththi kiliyae

This massive barrier would have broken down.
En chinna pasungiliyae
Oh my little green parrot,
Chithiramae rathinamae
Oh beautiful painting, oh precious gem,
Enna thavikkavittu
Leaving me here to suffer in agony,
Eppadi thaan vaazhuviyo
How will you ever manage to live?
Kannakadhuppu kullae
Within the softness of your cheek,
Kaanaama ena tholaichen
I lost myself without a trace.

Sathiyamaa konnuruppen
I swear I would have killed them,
Modhi sanda pottupputtu
Or clashing and fighting fiercely with them,
Moochadakki poyiruppen
I would have lost my breath and died.
Paavi magalae nee
You sinful girl,
Paadhiyilae konnupputta
You killed me halfway through life.
Aavi thudikkudhadi
My spirit is writhing in pain,
Aththanaiyum andhadhadi
Everything has come to an end,
Aththanaiyum andhadhadi
Everything has come to an end.
Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
This poignant song expresses the raw agony and anguish of a lover whose beloved gave up on their relationship too soon. He laments that if she had held on for just a moment longer, they could have overcome societal and familial barriers to be united in marriage. He recounts how devotedly he waited for her, feeling now that his life and spirit have withered away like dry leaves.

Poetic devices
Metaphor
“Verum sarugaa ponadhadi”
Compares his withered heart and shattered hopes directly to dry, lifeless fallen leaves (sarugu).
Iyaipu (Rhyming Endings)
“Ippo vembi vadhangudhadi / Verum sarugaa ponadhadi / Thembum koranjadhadi”
The repetitive suffix '-adhadi' at the end of consecutive lines creates a rhythmic, lamenting cadence characteristic of Tamil folk elegies.
Hyperbole / Dramatic Exaggeration
“Sathiyamaa konnuruppen / Modhi sanda pottupputtu / Moochadakki poyiruppen”
Expresses extreme passion by stating he would have killed anyone who stood in their way or fought until his very last breath.
