Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

Junior Junior from the 1977 film Avargal is a unique narrative track featuring a ventriloquist act performed by Janardhan (Kamal Haasan) with his puppet Junior. Through an entertaining yet biting dialogue, the puppet acts as Janardhan's alter-ego and moral conscience, pointing out the complications of loving a woman caught in marital dilemma and emotional turmoil.

Writing craft

Poetic devices

Metaphor (Uvamai / Uruvagam)

Karaiyinil aadum naanalae nee

Compares the protagonist's confused state to a reed swaying helplessly on a riverbank.

Paradox (Muran)

Kadarkarai thaagam idhu thaan unthan kaadhal adaa

Compares his futile love to standing at a seashore seeking fresh drinking water.

Contrast (Muran)

Chithirai maadham mazhaiyai thedi vaadugindraai Maargazhi maadham veyilai thedi odugindraai

Contrasts searching for rain during peak summer (Chithirai) and looking for warmth during winter (Maargazhi) to highlight misaligned desires.

Etukai (Second letter rhyme)

Adainjavanukku aipasi maasam Emaanthaalo april maasam

The second letter 'da' rhymes between Adainjavanukku and Emaanthaalo to create dynamic rhythm.

Trivia

For his role as a ventriloquist in Avargal, Kamal Haasan learned real ventriloquism under the guidance of famed Indian ventriloquist M. M. Roy. Legendary composer M. S. Viswanathan scored the music, with playback singers S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and L. R. Eswari delivering the distinct voices of the ventriloquist and the puppet.
