My fortune is good fortune, it is always the elders' blessing! My aunt's daughter is my lucky match—let the whole town talk about it, beat the drums and play the music! My aunt's daughter is my lucky match—let the whole town talk about it, beat the drums and play the music! My fortune is good fortune, it is always the elders' blessing!
When, oh when, when, oh when, when, oh when, when, oh when?
Victory arrives every day where there is good fortune; only pure arrogance gathers where there is money.
When the time is right, this town will sing your praise and peace will fill your heart; power, love, and an army of support will gather, and separated family will return too!
For one in ten million, good fortune reaches its peak and no trouble ever comes looking for him; whatever comes and goes, only what is fated to stick will stay!
If he is a bridegroom, what a bridegroom—fresh and fragrant like curry leaves! Hoy hoy hoy hoy! Chorus: If he is a bridegroom, what a bridegroom—fresh and fragrant like curry leaves! Hoy hoy hoy hoy!
He is like neem leaves that drive away evil spirits from the possessed! Hoy... hoy... hoy hoy! He is like neem leaves that drive away evil spirits from the possessed! Hoy... hoy... hoy hoy!
In his smile, hoy, there is no bitterness; who doesn't enjoy his playful mischief? Hoy! Daya danga daya danga daya danga dangana!
The town gossips endlessly, but hesitates to speak the truth; it puts on a hundred disguises and constantly scolds with lies!
Hold on, the whole district knows it! What is this fiery temper for? Why this haughtiness, lady? This attitude is no good! I have given my solemn word, solid like areca nut inside a betel leaf!
If Queen-mother makes up her mind, good things will happen; if she doesn't listen to good advice, the house will split in two! Well, the proof is right there, do I really have to spell out every trick?
My fortune is good fortune, it is always the elders' blessing! My aunt's daughter is my lucky match—let the whole town talk about it, beat the drums and play the music! My aunt's daughter is my lucky match—let the whole town talk about it, beat the drums and play the music! My fortune is good fortune, it is always the elders' blessing! My fortune is good fortune, it is always the elders' blessing!

Beyond the translation

Overall song meaning

'Ennoda Raasi Nalla Raasi' is a high-energy Tamil mass folk song where the protagonist exuberantly celebrates his good fortune, righteousness, and innate charm. He attributes his luck not to mere wealth, but to the blessings of elders and a pure heart. The lyrics draw a sharp contrast between genuine good character, which brings lasting peace and unity, and empty riches, which only bring arrogance and conflict. Throughout the track, the song playfully addresses family dynamics, town gossip, and social rivalries with local colloquial humor and folk metaphors. The hero projects supreme confidence and goodwill, asserting that integrity and good destiny will always triumph over deceit and hostility.

Writing craft

Poetic devices

Ethugai (Second Letter Rhyming)

Raasi ulla pakkam / Kaasu ulla pakkam

The second consonant 's' (ஸ்) matches across adjacent lines ('Raasi' and 'Kaasu'), creating a rhythmic flow.

Metaphor / Cultural Imagery

Maappilaina maappilla Vaasa karuvepilla

Compares the ideal bridegroom to fresh, fragrant curry leaves ('karuvepilla'), symbolizing freshness and essential value.

Simile / Folk Allusion

Pei pidicha pergala Otividum vaepilla

Uses the traditional cultural belief of using neem leaves ('vaepilla') to drive away evil spirits as a metaphor for driving away toxic or negative people.

Iyaipu (End Rhyme)

Neram koodum podhu... Nenjukulla nimmadhi varum... Vittupona sondhamum varum

The repetition of the ending word 'varum' produces an agreeable Iyaipu end-rhyme scheme.

Trivia

This track is a reimagined remix of the iconic 1989 song of the same name originally composed by Maestro Ilaiyaraaja and sung by S. P. Balasubrahmanyam for Superstar Rajinikanth's blockbuster 'Mappillai'. In the 2011 remake starring Rajinikanth's then son-in-law Dhanush, music director Vijay Antony adapted and rearranged the track while retaining Gangai Amaran's original hit lyrics as a tribute to the original classic.
