A deity like a husband,
Where is there in this world, where in this world?
Sending eyes as messengers, losing one's mind in desire,
If illicit love is committed, isn't it a sin? Won't a curse follow?
A deity like a husband,
Where is there in this world, where in this world?
Oh sinful woman, because of your gaze my meditation was broken!
Do not come near, stay far away, stand back!
Female: Due to unfortunate times, I lost control of my thoughts,
Even God Himself come and speak for me!
Fie! Losing chastity and calling upon God,
Will the one who accepted you ever return?
Female: If the husband wills it and forgives just once,
Even God does not need to come, no need!
Hey Parasurama, O Parasurama!
So that all who see tremble, as love lies shattered,
Daringly cut this sinner woman's head into two,
It must be chopped into pieces!
She must thrash about vigorously in a flood of blood!

Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
This dramatic musical narrative from 'Rani Lalithangi' (1957) depicts the famous mythological tale of Sage Jamadagni, his virtuous wife Renuka, and their son Parasurama. Renuka's extraordinary chastity allowed her to fetch river water daily using a vessel made of raw, unbaked clay. However, when a momentary lapse in focus occurs—caused by observing a reflection or entity—her spiritual power wavers and the raw clay pot dissolves, breaking the sage's deep meditation. Furious at what he perceives as a compromise of her virtue, Sage Jamadagni commands his son Parasurama to decapitate Renuka. The song transitions into an intense emotional conflict involving fatherly command, maternal plea, divine justice, and Parasurama's anguish over committing matricide due to bounden duty and karma.
