Oh white moon... Oh white moon...
The white cloud searches for you today.
The golden sight of you sleeping on my chest...
Is dissolving into tears.
Oh life... Without you who are my life...
There is no soul left in my life, my dear.
Because of you, because of you, because of you...
My heart broke, it is the truth, my dear.
Thinking of you... thinking of you...
I am wilting...
Only your fragrance in the wind...
I am searching for...
Oh white moon... Oh white moon...
The white cloud searches for you today.
Where are you? Where are you?
My eyes wander, searching and searching.
Oh love, oh love, through your love...
My dear, I too came to know love.
Night and day, just to see you...
I carried my life like a burden.
Here and there,
Everywhere I search for you.
A meaningless life...
I live here.

Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
This song from 'Deiva Thirumagal' expresses the unbearable pain and deep sorrow of a father separated from his young daughter. Addressing his child as a bright white moon ('Vennilave') and comparing himself to a searching cloud, he mourns how his world has turned desolate without her presence. The memory of her sleeping peacefully on his chest now brings tears, rendering his existence empty and meaningless.
Writing craft
Poetic devices
Metaphor (Urvaham)
“Venmegam unnai indru thediduthae”
The child is metaphorically referred to as 'Vennilavae' (white moon), and the father's yearning self is framed as 'Venmegam' (white cloud) searching for her.
Anaphora / Repetition (Adukku Thodar)
“Unnaal unnaal unnaalae”
Repetition of words like 'Vennilavae', 'Unnaal', and 'Anbae' creates an intensely emotional, rhythmic plea conveying desperation.
Alliteration (Monai)
“Uyirae..uyir nee..illaamal / Uyiril uyirum illayadi”
The recurrence of initial 'U' sounds ('Uyirae', 'Uyir', 'Uyiril') highlights the central motif of life and soul.
