Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

This song serves as a fiery revolutionary warning to corrupt rulers and oppressive authorities, declaring that their reign of tyranny is drawing to a close. It urges the oppressor to mend their ways before the oppressed rise up to shatter their arrogant status. The lyrics emphasize that the common people, who were once suppressed and silent, have now recognized the injustice and gathered the courage to stand up, question power structures, and establish a new egalitarian order.

Writing craft

Poetic devices

Compares corrupt modern laws to flexible reeds ('naanal') that bend easily according to power and wealth.

Mythological Allusion

Composed by the duo Shankar-Ganesh for the 1984 film 'Vaanga Mappillai Vaanga', it carries strong social reformist undertones typical of 1980s Tamil cinema hero intro/philosophical tracks.
