Even as the sky cracks with thunder,
And the earth turns to dust,
O beautiful form dancing in the midst!
As banners sway and crowns dance,
O artistic beauty rising and dancing amidst ashes!
In a way that makes a child's heart leap with joy,
O Goddess, you stand!
As the beat of drums echoes loudly,
Will you not come?
Will you not give an answer?
Will you not look upon me like the moon?
Will you not shower your rain of grace?
With bees buzzing 'galin galin' at your reddish hands,
Chanting 'Victory, Victory!',
With your waist swaying in harmony,
As your anklets chime together,
Softly swaying with delicate grace,
O lotus-dwelling Goddess, as I sing of you,
The child moon rises in the sky!
Come swiftly!
Rise and come!
Come with tender compassion!
Kali, the fierce one, the bearer of the trident, the divine Matangi,
Appears in my eyes!
Rising with eyes turned red,
She grants a divine vision!
Saying, 'May this withered son
Prosper and live long!',
She utters a divine blessing!
Across the heavens and the earth everywhere,
She appears as a single form!
She appears as a form of exquisite beauty!
The Mother appears!

Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
This song is a dramatic devotional composition based on the famous legend of Abirami Pattar, a 18th-century Tamil saint and devotee of Goddess Abirami. When the King tests Pattar's divine vision by asking what day it was, Pattar—absorbed in divine contemplation—mistakenly says it is a Full Moon night on a New Moon day. Facing execution, Pattar sings praises to Goddess Abirami, challenging her divine grace to save his honor and prove his faith. The song transitions from intense devotion and pleading to ultimate divine epiphany, as the Goddess throws her sparkling earring into the sky to create the illusion of a full moon, vindicating her devotee.
