Listen to the story of Rama
Listen to the story of Rama
Listen to the story of Sri Raghu Rama...
Listen to the story of Rama...
Sita beautifully adorned, a queen of pure grace,
Meeting her gaze, he took his place in her heart,
Looking into her eyes, he made a home in her heart,
And gave her the wedding garland—
Listen to the story of Rama...
On the day set for Sita's swayamvaram (bridegroom choice ceremony),
When Janaki entered Janaka's hall holding the garland,
Wondering, "Has the bright moon descended to earth?"
All the kings gazed at her in wonder,
While, "Will Lord Sri Ramachandra
not look up and see her?"
so they worried, it is said,
Lady Sita's dearest companions!
Listen to the story of Rama
Listen to the story of Rama
Listen to the story of Sri Raghu Rama...
Listen to the story of Rama...
Men with the strength of tigers had arrived
Sa Ni Dha Pa Ma Ga Ri Sa
Kings with the strength of elephants were there
Sa Ga Ri Ga Ma Ni Dha Ma Ni Ni
Men with the strength of tigers had arrived
Dha Dhakita Dhakajanu Dha
Kings with the strength of elephants were there
Dhaka Janu Dhakathimidhaka
Warriors arrived who could lift mountains on their shoulders
Ri Dha Ma Pa Ma Ga Ri Ga
Many were there who could catch thunderbolts in hand, aha...
Sita walked forward, she walked forward
Her eyes blossomed as she looked across the court
Seeing her arrival, seeing her beauty,
Even the string of Shiva's bow trembled like a veena!
Listen to the story of Rama
Listen to the story
The kings who stepped forward to break the bow
fell flat on their faces and crashed down
Some rose up, slapping their thighs in challenge,
Only to buckle at the knees and crash straight to the ground!
The kings who stepped forward to break the bow
fell flat on their faces and crashed down
Chorus: Some rose up,
Male: Those who rose slapping their thighs in challenge,
With shattered knees, crashed straight to the ground!
Chorus: Aha, they crashed straight to the ground!
With aching legs and aching hands,
with aching shoulders, they cried out in pain!
Some, clutching their hips,
nursing their sprains, searched for seats and sat down!
Aha, is there no courage here?
Are there no men to bend and break the bow?
{Aha, is there no courage?
Male and Chorus: Is there none?
Male: Are there no men to break the bow?
Male and Chorus: Is there none?} (2)
Ramaya Ramabhadraya Ramachandraya Namaha
Dasaratha's Rama came leaping forward!
He stood gazing at the bow with one eye,
Chorus: Dasaratha's Rama came leaping forward!
Male: Yes!
Chorus: He stood gazing at the bow with one eye,
And looked at Sita with the other eye!
And looked at Sita with the other eye!
The very next moment, he lifted the bow and drew the string!
Chorus: The very next moment, he lifted the bow and drew the string!
Crack! Snap! Crash!
With a thunderous roar, Shiva's bow snapped in two!
And with that sound, her heart burst into smiles!
Victory to Rama, Sita's Rama!
Chorus: Victory to Rama, Sita's Rama!
Dasaratha's Rama, Janaka is your father-in-law!
Chorus: Dasaratha's Rama, Janaka is your father-in-law!
Victory to Rama, Sita's Rama!
Chorus: Victory to Rama, Sita's Rama!
Male: Dasaratha's Rama, Janaka is your father-in-law!
The grand celebration of Sita's wedding,
The grand celebration of Sri Rama's wedding!
Chorus: The grand celebration of Sita's wedding,
The grand celebration of Sri Rama's wedding!
The more we watch, the more wonderful it looks,
We need a thousand more eyes to take it all in!
Female and Chorus:
The more we watch, the more wonderful it looks,
We need a thousand more eyes to take it all in!
Look right there, it is Lord Rama!
Sita beautifully adorned, a queen of pure grace,
Meeting her gaze, he took his place in her heart,
Looking into her eyes, he made a home in her heart,
And gave her the wedding garland—

Beyond the translation

Overall song meaning

'Raaman Kadhai Kelungal' from the film Sippikkul Muthu (1985) is a vivid musical story-telling performance narrating the epic episode of Sita's Swayamvaram from the Ramayana. Performed as a street play/folk song within the film narrative, it humorously portrays the arrival of arrogant kings boasting elephantine and tiger-like strength who fail miserably in lifting Lord Shiva's mighty bow (Siva Thanusu), injuring themselves in comical ways. The narrative reaches its crescendo when Dasaratha's son Rama steps forward, gazes at the bow and Sita, effortlessly lifts and snaps the divine bow, and wins Sita's hand in marriage amid grand celebration and festive singing.

Writing craft

Poetic devices

Metaphor (Uruvagamm)

Vennilaa mannilaa vanthathu endru

Compares Sita's arrival to the full moon descending onto the earth ('Vennilaa mannilaa vanthathu endru').

Hyperbole (Uvarchirpoo / Adukku Thodar)

Tholil malaiyai thookkoya veerar vanthaar

Exaggerates the strength of competing suitors who could lift mountains or grasp lightning bolts in their hands.

Simile (Uvamai)

Siva thanusin naanum veenai pola adhirnthathu

Compares the subtle vibration of Shiva's bow string upon seeing Sita to the melodic string of a musical veena ('veenai pola adhirnthathu').

Onomatopoeia (Esoliyakkam)

Pada pada pada pada pada pada

Use of rhythmic words 'Pada pada pada' to mimic the sudden snapping sound of Shiva's bow breaking.

Trivia

In the film 'Sippikkul Muthu' (the Tamil dubbed version of K. Viswanath's Telugu classic 'Swathi Muthyam'), Kamal Haasan plays an autistic man who performs this puppet-like folk musical on stage. Composed by Ilaiyaraaja, the song incorporates traditional Carnatic swaras and solkattu rhythmic syllables seamlessly within the storytelling lyricism written by Vairamuthu.
