Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

The track from the 1995 blockbuster movie Baasha blends grandeur with deep philosophical wisdom. The intro establishes the protagonist Baasha as a singular, irreplaceable figure in the world, just like the sun for the day and the moon for the night. The main section of the song breaks human lifespan down into eight distinct stages of eight years each (spanning 0 to 64 years and beyond), prescribing appropriate milestones for each age group. According to lyricist Vairamuthu, play belongs to childhood (0-8), education to youth (8-16), marriage to early adulthood (16-24), parenthood to adulthood (24-32), wealth generation to middle age (32-40), world experience and travel to mature adulthood (40-48), and rest to old age (48-56). Living beyond 64 years is described as a period where peace becomes hard to attain. The song urges the listener to reflect on where they currently stand in their own lifespan.

Writing craft

Poetic devices

Yamakam / Pun (Wordplay on 'Ettu')

Ettukulla vaazhkai irrukku raamaiah / Budhikku ettum padi solla poren

The word 'Ettu' is cleverly used both as the number eight (eight-year blocks) and as the Tamil verb 'Ettu' meaning 'reach' or 'comprehend' ('Budhikku ettum padi').

Emoni (Second-letter Rhyme)

Ettukulla ulagam irrukku raamaiah / Naan puttu puttu vekkaporen paaraiah

Standard Tamil poetic technique where the second consonant matches across line pairs ('tti' in Ettu / puttu).

Anaphora / Structural Parallelism

Mudhal ettil aadadhadhu vilaiyaatalla / Nee irandaam ettil kallaadhadhu kalviyum alla

Phrasing each stage with the repeated formulaic structure 'X-aam ettil... alla' creates a memorable, rhythmic cadence.

Trivia

Composed by Deva for the Rajinikanth starrer Baasha (1995), 'Raaraa Ramaiah' is heavily inspired by classical Tamil Siddhar and Pattinathar philosophical poetry that categorizes human life into chronological phases. It remains one of Tamil cinema's most famous philosophical dance numbers.
