You are a green fire,
I am a tightly bound flower.
With just a single look,
You set me ablaze.
I was an ordinary stone,
You are the carving chisel.
Out of a simple rock,
You sculpted a work of art.
You are the white star
Shining upon the earth,
A jewel of a star
Resting in my palm.
When we hold hands,
They become wings,
And brand new skies
Are born.
You are a green fire,
I am a tightly bound flower.
With just a single look,
You set me ablaze.
To look for my sword
Inside your deer-like eyes,
I climbed a mighty mountain to reach you.
That I even have a heart,
I realized only when you called me.
I yearned to hold you even tighter in my embrace.
You are the white star
Shining upon the earth,
A jewel of a star
Resting on my shoulder.
Against your shoulder,
I lean mine,
And peacock feathers
Unfurl inside me.
You are a green fire,
I am a tightly bound flower.
With just a single look,
You set me ablaze.
I was an ordinary stone,
You are the carving chisel.
Out of a simple rock,
You sculpted a work of art.
If you listen to the songs
Rising from every scratch,
You will feel the passion
Born of our clash.
Even if I live many lifetimes,
I will never forget this moment.
I asked for this pain to be given as a blessing.
You are the white star
Shining upon the earth,
A jewel of a star
Spilling honey from your eyes.
Into your heart,
I swam deep,
And the true depth of love,
I discover now.
You are a green fire,
I am a tightly bound flower.
With just a single look,
You set me ablaze.
I was an ordinary stone,
You are the carving chisel.
Out of a simple rock,
You sculpted a work of art.

Beyond the translation

Overall song meaning

'Pachai Thee' is a sensuous and evocative duet from the blockbuster film Baahubali: The Beginning. The song captures the enchanting awakening of love and sensuality between Shivudu (Sivagami's foster son) and Avanthika (a warrior rebel). Avanthika, who has dedicated her life solely to her mission, discovers her soft, feminine side and capacity for love through Shivudu's affectionate and romantic persistence, which strips away her harsh warrior exterior like a chisel sculpting art out of a plain rock.

Writing craft

Poetic devices

Metaphor (Uvamai / Uruvagamm)

Pachai thee neeyada / Vetru kal naanada

Shivudu is metaphorically addressed as 'Pachai thee' (green fire) and 'Vettum uzhi' (sharp chisel), while Avanthika compares herself to an unshaped rock ('Arpa paarai') sculpted into art.

Emona / Rhyme (Monai)

Pachai thee neeyada / Patrikondaaiyada

Alliteration of the initial consonant sounds in 'Pachai' and 'Patrikondaaiyada', creating a rhythmic cadence.

Hyperbole (Uyarvu Navortchi)

Kaigal naam korkka siragaagumae / Pudhu vaanangal uruvaagumae

Exaggerating the magical transformation of holding hands into growing wings capable of creating new skies.

Trivia

Composed by M. M. Keeravani (credited as M. M. Kreem / Maragathamani in Tamil), the lyrics were penned by Madhan Karky. In this song, Avanthika's warrior camouflage makeup and body paint are gradually removed by Shivudu, visually symbolizing her shedding her battle-hardened identity to accept her inner beauty and romantic feelings.
