Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

This song expresses deep agony, heartbreak, and despair caused by separation from a loved one. The protagonist feels as though a sin from a past life has incurred divine wrath, leaving them completely helpless and devoid of emotional support. Time itself is personified as a ruthless god of death who feels no compassion for the agony of love, endlessly tormenting the protagonist with overwhelming memories. The speaker questions the purpose of living through such relentless suffering, desperately praying for relief from the heavy emotional burden. Struggling with burning breath and painful recollections of spoken words, they long for strength and healing while lamenting that the joy and vitality of their life have been stolen.

Poetic devices

Personification (Uruvagam)

Nammai kondru vittu / Kolli vaitha kaalan enben

Time ('Kaalam') is personified as 'Kaalan' (the god of death) who heartlessly destroys love and brings fatal grief.

Adukkuthodar (Repetition for Emphasis)

Nyabagangal vanthu vanthu / Thaakkiduthae

Words like 'vanthu vanthu' and 'thorkadiththu thorkadiththu' are repeated consecutively to convey the continuous, unrelenting waves of painful memories and defeats.

Edhukai (Second-letter Assonance)

Nalam varumaa … / Balam tharumaa…

The second consonant 'la' matches in 'Nalam' and 'Balam', creating a rhythmic flow across the two lines.

Iyaibu (End Rhyme)

Veguthu en moochu / Nokuthu un pechu

The matching ending sound '-uthu' in 'Veguthu' and 'Nokuthu' establishes emotional harmony between the physical sensation of burning breath and the mental pain of words.
