Hey... a sharp curved billhook knife
With hammers and all surrounding tools
I am capable of turning everything into solid iron
My name is Kanniyan, my friend
Hey... amidst raw dried fish
And black cats
Without losing shape or form
If kept covered just as it is
I am capable of guarding it well
My body is dark blue like the Kayaam flower...

And lay down softly on a cotton mattress
When you were sleeping
Disturbing bad dreams
Appeared in confusion, O lady
Everything that happened there

All the past events

From the royal palace harem
Crossing eight miles of distance
Leaving the place where you were
You sought our temple, didn't you?
Riding a pearl palanquin, O lady with lush hair
You arrived here

If it's true say yes
If it's not say no
Along the narrow foot track
All the warriors who hid in wait
To stop the palanquin
Came pouncing upon you then
If it's true say yes
If it's not say no
Mm...
Rolling severed heads
One, two, three
Tell me if it happened
Ah, say yes, say yes
Yes
The frightened men
Fled in terror
Tell me if it happened
Ah, say yes, say yes
At that moment
Someone arrived there
Tell me if it happened
Ah, say yes, say yes
Leaping like a ball
Making the onlookers tremble
He drew a sharp sword
Yes, he drew a sharp sword
Spinning around like a top
He chased away and struck the enemies
Yes, he chased away and struck the enemies
Salutations sir, salutations
Salutations sir, salutations
Without prior acquaintance, to save us
O brave hero who came forward, who are you?
When you asked this, the man who came to you
Said he was the ghost of a dead man
As soon as he said that, your head spun and in the palanquin
Is it not true that you fainted and fell?
If it's true say yes
If it's not say no
Aang... all that about being a ghost
It is all a lie, my lady
It is all a lie, my lady
There is a real living man there
There is a real living man there
Because of one sinful fellow
He became a destitute wanderer, lady
He became a destitute wanderer
Do not be afraid...
Do not be afraid
Wearing many disguises
He wanders and comes along, lady

Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
This song from Raja Rajan (1957) is a dramatic street-play style narrative performance. It opens with intense invocations to various fiercely protective forms of the Mother Goddess such as Magamaayi, Abirami, Mariamman, and Chamundi, pleading for divine protection and blessings. The performer then adopts a fortune-teller persona to recount a terrifying yet heroically resolved past event experienced by the noble lady listening. The narrative describes how the lady left the palace in a pearl palanquin and was ambushed by bandits on a narrow path. Just when terror struck, a mysterious hero jumped in like a bouncing ball, twirled his broadsword like a spinning top, and routed the attackers. Although the hero initially claimed to be a ghost—causing the lady to faint in fear—the narrator reveals that he was actually a living, noble prince forced into disguise and hardship due to a villain's plot. The song concludes on a comforting note, reassuring the lady that her protector is a true hero who will succeed before the flowers wither.
