Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

This folk-style narrative song conveys a story of love, secret rendezvous, and dramatic complications. A beautiful flower girl encounters a handsome, tiger-like youth at twilight while plucking flowers. They spend the entire night talking until dawn. Unable to sleep due to her deep longing, she sends a clever female messenger to negotiate a marriage proposal with him.

Poetic devices

Ethukai and Esubu (Rhyme and Rhythm)

Kondaattam manasukkullae kondaattam / Thindaattam maattikkittaa thindaattam

The pairing of 'Kondaattam' (celebration) and 'Thindaattam' (struggle) creates a rhythmic antithesis that sets the playful tone of the song.

Uvamai (Simile)

Vaengai pola aala kandu

The male protagonist is compared to a tiger ('Vaengai pola') to depict his striking, brave appearance.

Uvamai (Simile)

Parundhu pola kaathirundhu

The groom waiting to whisk away his bride is compared to an eagle swooping down ('Parundhu pola').
