O married man, are you doing fine?
O married man, are you doing fine?
Is your darling peacock of a wife doing fine too?
O married man, are you doing fine?
Is your darling peacock of a wife doing fine too?
In order to give birth to a child,
She went to her birthplace, didn't she?
In order to give birth to a child,
She went to her birthplace, didn't she?
What child did she give birth to?
What name did she give the baby?
O married man...
O married man, are you doing fine?
Is your darling peacock of a wife doing fine too?
Upon gazing at the maiden's face again and again,
Did a trance come over you?
When trying to put that down on paper,
Did hesitation come over you?
Upon gazing at the maiden's face again and again,
Did a trance come over you?
When trying to put that down on paper,
Did hesitation come over you?
Your face to me as well,
Gave a dizzying enchantment,
Your face to me as well,
Gave a dizzying enchantment,
I too realized the truth,
From today onwards, sleep will not come to me.
O married man...
O married man, are you doing fine?
Is your darling peacock of a wife doing fine too?
The doors of a new house,
I kept open,
By telling a lie, for rent,
I moved in as a tenant,
The doors of a new house,
I kept open,
By telling a lie, for rent,
I moved in as a tenant,
Today, the doors of the heart's house,
Shall we open them up?
The doors of the heart's house,
Shall we open them up?
Will the two of us,
Become one and dwell together?
O married man...
O married man, are you doing fine?
Is your darling peacock of a wife doing fine too?
O married man, are you doing fine?
Kalyaanam aanavarae saukkiyamaa
O married man, are you doing fine?

Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
This playful yet emotionally suggestive song from Kumudham (1961) features a female protagonist teasingly questioning a man who claims to be married. She gently inquires about his well-being, his wife who has allegedly gone to her mother's home for childbirth, and the details of their newborn child. Underlying her playful jibes is a confession of her own romantic affection for him. She admits that looking at his face puts her in a trance and keeps her awake at night. Extending the metaphor of renting a room in a new home under false pretenses, she invites him to open the doors of their hearts so that the two of them can unite as one and live together in love.
