Oh God, in your divine palace...
There are so many jewel-bright lamps...
Oh Master, at your sacred feet...
Stands the light lamp of my faith...
The light lamp of my faith...
Oh Almighty, your feet...
I bathed with my tears...
To grant life to this single soul...
Today I extend my hands in prayer before you...
Oh Lord Muruga...
Oh Almighty, your feet...
I bathed with my tears...
To grant life to this single soul...
Today I extend my hands in prayer before you...
Among your twelve eyes...
Even if just one or two bloom with grace...
Among your twelve eyes...
Even if just one or two bloom with grace...
In both of my two eyes...
The light of joy will shine...
The noble one who lives in everyone's hearts...
The good man who gives generously to all...
The noble one who lives in everyone's hearts...
The good man who gives generously to all...
If the heavenly world summons him...
What will become of this earthly world?

Even the clouds shed tears...
The lightning writhes in pain...
Will not the heavens melt in sorrow...
Without beholding the benefactor's face?

Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
This poignant song from Oli Vilakku (1968) is a heart-wrenching devotional plea addressed to Lord Murugan. The protagonist tearfully prays for the life of a benevolent and selfless leader who is gravely ill. She bathes the deity's feet in her tears, arguing that if the righteous leader dies and goes to heaven, the earthly realm will lose its patron and savior.
