Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

This narrative song from Mayakkari (1951) depicts a young woman reflecting on the socio-cultural plight of women, highlighting issues such as street harassment, dowry burdens, and societal expectations. As the song progresses, she encounters various men from different strata of society—a deceitful rogue, a wealthy Zamindar, and a greedy moneylender (Saukaar)—each trying to allure her with promises of riches, status, or superficial affection. She sharply rejects each of them, exposing the hypocrisy, oppression, and corruption underlying their status.

Poetic devices

Moonaai (Initial Alliteration)

Azhagae thaane aagumae thollai

Repetition of the initial vowel sound 'A' across consecutive lines (Azhagae, Adharkku, Allal, Arattaigal).

Edhugai (Second-letter Rhyme)

Aasthigal paasthigal tharuvenae

The second consonant sound 'th' is repeated across adjacent lines (Aasthigal / Aasaigal).

Simile (Uwamai)

Kann imai polae kaathiduvenae

The speaker compares protective care to how an eyelid shields the eye ('Kann imai polae').

Metaphor (Uruvagaimai)

Oo oo uzhudhunnum raaja va va

Addressing the farmer as 'Uzhudhunnum raaja' (the king who eats by farming), elevating the hardworking peasant to royalty.
