Hey cousin, my precious cousin,
don't touch me!
Hey cousin, my precious cousin,
don't touch me!
Hey girl, what did you just say?
Come here in front of me!
Hey girl, what did you just say?
Come here in front of me!
He grabbed my hand!
Oh lord, he grabbed my hand!
Aahh...
This morning, someone
came and grabbed my hand!
Did you give him your hand?
Hey girl, did you give him your hand?
Dazed with love in your eyes,
did you hug him tight?
Hey cousin, my precious cousin,
don't touch me!
He grabbed my foot!
Slowly, slowly...
With some calculated purpose,
he grabbed my foot!
He touched my chest, slowly, slowly,
as I took long, deep breaths,
he touched my chest!
Did you give him your foot?
Hey girl, did you give him your foot?
Unable to wait any longer,
did you fall into his arms?
He touched your chest?
Hey girl, did he touch your chest?
I can't even bear to imagine it...
did he come close and touch you?
Hey girl, what did you say?
Don't touch me!
He took my saree!
That rascal took my saree!
Along with the saree, the blouse too,
he took them both away!
He took my saree!
That rascal took my saree!
Along with the saree, the blouse too,
he took them both away!
You shameless girl!
You girl of ruined conduct!
Before I too get ruined because of you,
you have turned me away!
You shameless girl!
You girl of ruined conduct!
Before I too get ruined because of you,
you have turned me away!
That is enough, girl!
I have learned a lesson for a whole generation!
Enough, girl, that is enough!
I have learned a lesson for a whole generation!
Hahahaha!
Cousin... oh cousin...
He held my hand... to put on bangles!
Hmm...
He held my foot...
to tie my anklets!
Tsk... tsk... tsk...
He touched my chest to check my sickness!
Hmm...
He took my saree...
to wash it!
All right then!
He held my hand... to put on bangles!
He held my foot... to tie the anklets!
He touched my chest to check my sickness!
He took my saree to wash it, hahahaha!
Hey hey hey hey...
I was fooled, I was fooled!
I fooled you real good!
Aha...
Oh go on, my dear,
I knew everything all along!
Hmph...
I just played along and acted
as if I was angry!
Oh go on, my dear,
I knew everything all along!
Hey girl!
Hey cousin!
Hey girl!
Hey cousin!
Hey girl!
Hey cousin... oh cousin...

Beyond the translation

Overall song meaning

This playful playful duet features a playful banter between a heroine and her suitor/cousin (Machaan). The heroine teases her lover by telling a tall tale about another man who grabbed her hand, touched her feet, touched her chest, and took her clothing, driving her lover into a jealous and outraged frenzy. After seeing his dramatic reaction, she reveals the innocent truth behind each act—the man was putting on bangles, tying anklets, checking her pulse/health, and taking the clothes to the laundry. Upon realizing he was pranked, the hero quickly saves face by claiming he knew she was teasing him all along and was only acting angry to play along with her joke. The song ends in lighthearted harmony, highlighting Kannadasan's clever wordplay and K. V. Mahadevan's vibrant folk-inspired composition.

Writing craft

Poetic devices

Edhugai (Second-letter rhyme)

Kaiya pudichaanae / Kaalaiyilae oruthan vandhu

Matching second consonant 'i' in 'Kaiya' and 'Kaalaiyilae' creates rhythmic cohesion across consecutive lines.

Iyaibu (End rhyme)

Kaiya pudichaanae ... Nenjai thottaanae

Repeating '-aanae' at the end of multiple lines creates melodic repetition.

Double Entendre / Irony

Kaiya pudichaan… valaiyal poda / Kaalai pudichaan… Salangai katta

The lyrics use suggestive physical descriptions (grabbing hand, holding feet, touching chest, taking clothes) that initially sound scandalous but are humorously re-contextualized into everyday innocent actions.

Trivia

'Pattikaattu Ponnaiya' (1973) stars M. G. Ramachandran (MGR) and Jayalalithaa. This song is a classic example of rural folk duet comedy tracks popularized in Tamil cinema during the 1970s, where Kannadasan uses misdirection to create playful tension between the lead characters.
