Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
This romantic duet, 'Aaruyire' (Ey Maanpuru Mangaye) from the Tamil version of Guru (2007), depicts an intimate dialogue between two lovers expressing their affection through poetic banter. The male lover praises the heroine in grand, classical terms, while she playfully asks him to drop the complex literary references and express his love in simple, heartfelt words. Despite her request, he remains enchanted by her beauty, claiming that her eyes and smile inspire poetic genius in him beyond even the legend Kamban.

Trivia
Composed by A.R. Rahman with lyrics by Vairamuthu, 'Aaruyire' was originally sung by A.R. Rahman and Chinmayi Sripaada for Mani Ratnam's biographical drama film 'Guru' (2007). Vairamuthu cleverly contrasts ancient Sangam literature poetry against simple folk expression within the song's back-and-forth dialogue structure.
