Adar irul sirayilDense, dark prison,
Sudar thara yengidumLonging to cast a bright flame,
Siru pori naanoAm I merely a tiny spark?
Vidaigalin irulinilIn the darkness surrounding answers,
Puthirgalai thedumSearching for mysteries,
Vidiyalai kaanaaWithout ever witnessing a dawn,
Kathiravan naanoAm I a sun that never sees sunrise?

Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

This powerful track captures the raw agony, existential crisis, and plea for divine intervention of an innocent man falsely branded a criminal. Trapped in a literal and metaphorical prison of prejudice and conspiracy, the protagonist questions why his identity, patriotism, and basic humanity are stripped away simply because of his religious background. Through evocative imagery, he compares his plight to a spark trapped in darkness and a sun denied its dawn, expressing deep pain over being judged by superficial biases and manipulated data. Despite the intense suffering and torture he faces, he surrenders his pain to the Almighty (Yah Allah), questioning whether justice and righteousness will ultimately prevail over systemic corruption. The song serves as a poignant thematic pillar for the film *FIR*, highlighting the devastating real-world impact of Islamophobia, media trials, and stereotyping on innocent individuals.

Poetic devices

Metaphor

Adar irul sirayil / Sudar thara yengidum / Siru pori naano

The protagonist compares his fragile existence and hope inside the dark, oppressive prison to a 'tiny spark' longing to illuminate the darkness.

Metaphor

Kathiravan naano

Comparing himself to a 'sun that never sees a dawn' symbolizes having truth and potential within, yet being permanently silenced and hidden from light.

Ethugai (Second Letter Rhyme)

Idhu sadhigalin ulaiya / Idhu silandhiyin valaiya

The second consonant sound 'dhi' (தி) rhymes in 'sadhigalin' and 'silandhiyin'.

Monai (Initial Rhyme / Alliteration)

En manithathai udaithaal / Ennai mathathirkul adaithaal

Both lines begin with the matching initial sound 'En' ('எ'), creating a rhythmic impact.

Iyaipu (End Rhyme)

Pagai seigiraan sirai seigiraan / Vadhai seigiraan... / Vadham seigiraan...

Repetition of the ending verbal suffix 'seigiraan' across lines establishes a painful cadence of continuous actions inflicted upon the speaker.

Trivia

The song serves as a core emotional theme in the 2021 action-thriller 'FIR' (Faizal Ibrahim Raiz), directed by Manu Anand and produced by Vishnu Vishal (who also starred in the lead role of Irfan Ahmed). Composed by Ashwath with lyrics by Mashook Rahman, the song highlights the protagonist's struggle when wrongfully accused in a high-profile terrorism case due to circumstantial evidence and profiling. Notably, Vishnu Vishal performed his own vocal segments in parts of the film's promotional/track variations.
