Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

'Yaayum' from the movie Sagaa is a soul-stirring romantic track that beautifully fuses ancient Sangam Tamil poetry with modern youthful expressions of love. The song takes its central refrain from a iconic poem in the Kuruntokai (poem 40, written by Cempulappeyaniraar), which compares two lovers whose hearts blend inextricably together to red soil absorbing rainwater. The lyrics capture the sweet, overwhelming onset of young love—describing playful signs like stealing secret glances, smiling to oneself in front of a mirror, feeling weightless as if flying without wings, and walking aimlessly lost in deep thoughts of the loved one. It evokes a timeless sentiment: though two people may come from completely unrelated families, love merges their lives into an indivisible whole.
