In the net of the charming girl dressed in a bright skirt,
which fish in the world would not search her out and fall in?
Woman: Oh, oh, oh, oh!
Why waste time on such fancy talk?
Just focus on doing your work properly!
Even the fish that escapes every net must come and get caught,
it must get caught in our net!
God must stand by our side and help us,
must stand by our side!
Even the fish that escapes every net must come and get caught,
it must get caught in our net!
God must stand by our side and help us,
must stand by our side!
Like a graceful swan, my boat
gently sways and glides along!
Like a graceful swan, my boat
gently sways and glides along!
The lovely breeze sings a sweet folk tune,
and the cool waves clap their hands to the rhythm!
Thoughts never imagined before now fill my heart,
without my knowing, it weaves a net of pure joy!
Like a swan, aha...
Like a swan, ho ho...
Like a swan, my boat
gently sways and glides along!
Ha... aa... aah... ha... aah...
A beauty that even other women would desire,
O girl of extraordinary grace!
What is your name? Which is your town?
To the chief of the fishermen on the banks of the Ganges,
I am his beloved daughter, Parimalagandhi,
that is who I am, sir... that is me!
Take me, the King of Hastinapura, to the other shore,
and will you also fulfill my longing,
will you fulfill it... will you fulfill it?
Woman: In the blink of an eye I will take you to the other shore!
Step into the boat and witness this girl's skill,
come see for yourself, sir... come and see!
Oh, graceful beauty steering the boat!
I am melting with overwhelming desire!
Singing cuckoo, dancing peacock,
I am pining away because of you!
Graceful beauty steering the boat!
I am melting with overwhelming desire!
Singing cuckoo, dancing peacock,
I am pining away because of you!
Graceful beauty steering the boat!
I am melting with overwhelming desire!
O King who rules the land, hey!
O King who rules the land,
this is a rose blooming in the wild!
Should you really stray from your noble path?
Should you be teasing and playing tricks like this?
O King who rules the land,
this is a rose blooming in the wild!
This is a rose blooming in the wild!
To play such tricks and stray from my path,
who made me do it, my dear?
Just ask those spear-sharp eyes of yours!
Woman: Do not try to trick me with sweet words!
I am poor and from a different caste.
O King who rules the land,
this is a rose blooming in the wild!
This is a rose blooming in the wild!
What do barriers of caste and religion matter,
in the presence of true love, my dear?
Woman: Is having love enough for us?
Is it right to forget duty and righteousness?
My kinsfolk, my father and my mother—
do we not need their blessing? Tell me!
O King who rules the land,
this is a rose blooming in the wild!
This is a rose blooming in the wild!
To take your daughter's hand in marriage,
I have come seeking your blessing!
You must give your consent, king of fishermen!
To take your daughter's hand in marriage,
I have come seeking your blessing!
You must give your consent, king of fishermen!
I have no objection to giving my consent,
but please listen kindly to this poor man's condition.
The son born from my daughter's womb—
only if you grant him the sole right to rule this kingdom!
Even the fish that never got caught has now been caught,
it has been caught in our net!
God has stood by our side to help us,
has stood by our side!
Even the fish that never got caught has now been caught,
it has been caught in our net!
God has stood by our side to help us,
has stood by our side!

Beyond the translation

Overall song meaning

This classic musical dialogue song depicts the mythological encounter between King Shantanu of Hastinapur and Satyavati (Parimalagandhi), the daughter of the fisherman chief Dasaraja. As the king crosses the river Ganges in her boat, he is enchanted by her grace and beauty, leading to a romantic discourse where caste, royalty, and affection are debated. Shantanu asks for her hand in marriage, prompting the fisherman chief to place the historic condition that the son born to Satyavati must inherit the throne of Hastinapur.
