படைத்தானே
படைத்தானே மனிதனை
ஆண்டவன் படைத்தானே
He created.
He created mankind,
God created man.
வளர்த்தானே
வளர்த்தானே மனதினில்
கவலையை வளர்த்தானே
He nurtured.
He nurtured in the heart,
He nurtured worry.
படைத்தானே
படைத்தானே மனிதனை
ஆண்டவன் படைத்தானே
He created.
He created mankind,
God created man.
கொடுத்தானே
கொடுத்தானே மறதியை
ஆண்டவன் கொடுத்தானே
He gave.
He gave forgetfulness,
God gave forgetfulness.
பிரித்தானே
பிரித்தானே மனதையும்
கவலையும் பிரித்தானே
He separated.
He separated the mind,
And separated the worry as well.
படைத்தானே
படைத்தானே மனிதனை
ஆண்டவன் படைத்தானே
He created.
He created mankind,
God created man.
குரங்காய் இருந்த
மனிதன் மனதில் குழப்பம்
ஏதுமில்லை
When as an ape
Man once lived,
Confusion in his mind
Was not there at all.
குடும்பம் மனைவி
அண்ணன் தம்பி கூட்டம்
சிறிதுமில்லை
Family,
Wife, elder brother, younger brother,
There was no crowd at all.
ஆசை பாசம்
காதலில் விழுந்தான்
அமைதியை காணவில்லை
With desire, affection,
He fell in love,
And could not find peace.
அலைந்தான்
தவித்தான் துடித்தான்
மடிந்தான் யாருக்கும்
லாபமில்லை
He wandered,
Suffered, writhed,
And died, but for no one
Was there any gain.
படைத்தானே
படைத்தானே மனிதனை
ஆண்டவன் படைத்தானே
He created.
He created mankind,
God created man.
தன்னந்தனியே
பிறந்தவன் நெஞ்சில்
சஞ்சலம் இல்லையடா
All alone,
In the heart of the one who was born,
There is no anxiety, my friend.
இன்னொரு உயிரை
தன்னுடன் சேர்த்தால் என்றும்
தொல்லையடா
Another
Life alongside oneself,
If united, is always trouble, my friend.
இத்தனை சிறிய
மனிதனின் தலையில்
எத்தனை சுமைகளடா
Upon such a
Tiny human's
Head, how many burdens rest, my friend!
இருவதில் தொடங்கி
எழுவது வரைக்கும் என்றும்
மயக்கமடா
Starting at twenty,
And until seventy,
It is always a state of illusion, my friend.

Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
In this philosophical song from Nichaya Thaamboolam (1962), Kannadasan muses on the nature of human existence, creation, and existential distress. He notes that God created human beings and simultaneously placed worry into their minds, yet mercifully gifted forgetfulness to help them cope. The lyricist contrasts primal human state (when humans lived simply like primates without complex familial ties or emotional attachments) with modern human life, which is burdened by relationships, desires, and responsibilities. He argues that emotional attachments—to family, spouse, and relatives—bring constant anxiety, conflict, and loss of inner peace. From the age of twenty to seventy, life becomes a heavy burden of continuous illusions and struggles, ultimately leading to death with no true gain. Thus, the song reflects on the tragic irony of human emotional evolution and life's fleeting burdens.
