Ayya murugaiyya
I have no one besides You,
show me the way, Muruga!
With a melting heart, I pray, show me the light.
I have no one besides You,
show me the way, Muruga!
With a melting heart, I pray, show me the light.
I have come with deep faith,
asking for Your grace—
open the eyes of wisdom
and show me the way!
I have come with deep faith,
asking for Your grace—
open the eyes of wisdom
and show me the way!
O embodiment of grace, O Grace!
Does not this whole world belong to You?
Wisdom and all wealth in this life,
are You not everything?
I have no one besides You,
show me the way, Muruga!
With a melting heart, I pray, show me the light!
Please show me the light!
Does my Uncle in Tirupati (Lord Vishnu) have no eyes to see?
Is Aunt Lakshmi not a woman like me?
Does my Uncle in Tirupati have no eyes to see?
Is Aunt Lakshmi not a woman like me?
Has our suffering not caught their attention?
For our coming to Kathirkamam,
for our coming to Kathirkamam,
is there no blessing in return?
O Visalakshi of Kasi,
please speak to Your son!
O Kamakshi of Kanchi,
please speak to Your son!
O Angayarkanni (Goddess Meenakshi),
please speak to Your son!
O Mother Abhirami,
please speak to Your son!
I have seen! I have seen! Why... why... why...
I have seen...!
The precious Kumaran, the beloved Saravanan,
I have seen the divine healer!
There, the sacred crown of the crowned King,
and the rooster upon His flag, I have seen!
Making the striking, wicked serpent harmless,
I have seen the calling peacock!
As my state transformed, the eyes of wisdom
and the sight in my own eyes, I have received!
We have a home—the six sacred abodes (Arupadai Veedu)!
We have our holy scripture—Murugan's sacred feet!
We have a home—the six sacred abodes!
We have our holy scripture—Murugan's sacred feet!
We have a feast—the name of Lord Muruga!
We have the healing medicine—the Lord who cures all!
We have a feast—the name of Lord Muruga!
We have the healing medicine—the Lord who cures all!
O Lord, Muruga!
O Lord, Muruga!
O Lord, Muruga!
O Lord, Muruga!

Beyond the translation

Overall song meaning

Neeyindri Yaarumillai from the film Varuvan Vadivelan (1978) is an emotional devotional prayer addressed to Lord Murugan. The protagonist surrenders completely to Murugan, pleading for physical vision as well as spiritual enlightenment. She appeals to Lord Vishnu (the Tirupati uncle), Goddess Lakshmi, and various avatars of the Mother Goddess (Kashi Visalakshi, Kanchi Kamakshi, Madurai Angayarkanni, and Abirami) to intercede on her behalf and invoke Murugan's mercy during her pilgrimage to Kathirkamam. In the second half, her prayers are miraculously answered. The song shifts into an ecstatic celebration of vision regained, both physical ('Oona kann') and spiritual ('Gnana kann'). She joyously beholds Lord Murugan as Vaidhyanathan (the divine healer) along with his peacock and rooster flag, declaring that devotion to Murugan provides shelter, wisdom, feast, and ultimate medicine for all mortal suffering.

Moonaal / Monai (Initial Rhyme / Alliteration)

Neeyindri yaarumillai / Nenjuruga vendugiren

Anaphora (Repetitive Refrain)

Veedu namakkundu... Vedham namakkundu... Virundhu namakkundu... Marundhu namakkundu...

Rhythmic repetition of phrases like 'namakkundu' (we have) creates intense devotional fervor and emotional crescendo.

Juxtaposition / Antithesis
