Chorus :Haa..aaa..aaa
Has defeat cast its shadow over justice?
Has it bowed its head before shameless treachery?
Chorus: Ah... aa... aa...
Having lost everything to deceit,
Just to honor their given word,
Alas, they depart for the forest!
Having lost everything to deceit,
Just to honor their given word,
Alas, they depart for the forest!
With fate leading the way and virtue following behind,
Fearing the world would burn if his glance fell upon it,
Here goes Yudhisthira, walking with his head bowed low.
Chorus: Alas, he departs for the forest!
To fulfill the vow made in the royal assembly,
Wondering when the right day will arrive,
Seething like an erupting volcano, Bhima goes...
Chorus: Alas, he departs for the forest!
To destroy the Kaurava army, the very form of evil,
With his fierce and striking arrows,
Resolute in his heart, Arjuna marches on.
Having lost everything to deceit,
Just to honor their given word,
Alas, they depart for the forest!
How many ages this world has witnessed,
Yet no one has ever suffered a plight like yours, O Mother!
How many ages this world has witnessed,
Yet no one has ever suffered a plight like yours, O Mother!
You bore it all with patience, like the Earth itself.
Chorus: Ah... aa... aa...

Beyond the translation

Overall song meaning

This song mournfully depicts the tragic departure of the Pandavas into exile (Vanavasam) following their defeat in the treacherous game of dice loaded against them by the Kauravas. It captures the contrasting emotional states of the brothers and Draupadi as they head into the wild. Yudhishthira walks with a bowed head, holding back righteous anger that could consume the world; Bhima boils with suppressed rage like a volcano waiting to erupt; Arjuna marches ahead resolute in his promise to destroy evil; and Draupadi bears her deep sorrow and humiliation with the immense forbearance of Mother Earth.
