O dove on the courtyard ledge,
Will you go carry a message of love for me?
O dove on the courtyard ledge,
Will you go carry a message of love for me?
About my yearning, captivated heart,
Will you whisper it into my sweetheart's ear?
To drape a garment of pouring kisses,
To build a fence around the cashew grove,
Ask him why the delay to tie the wedding knot, oh...
O dove on the courtyard ledge,
Will you go carry a message of love for me?
About my yearning, captivated heart,
Will you whisper it into my beautiful girl's ear?
Thanthathath thantham thanthathath thantham
Thanthathath thantham thanthathath tham
Thanthathath thantham thanthathath thantham
Thanthathath thantham thanthathath tham
To a beauty like me who obeys
Your every command day after day,
Why do you tell made-up stories? Oho...
{Oho
Oho} (5)
For a sweet man who hovers around
Just to touch and embrace you,
Why is there any needless fear anymore?
Between the water and the roots,
There is no divide.
I have no other words left to say.
O protector of my dear life,
Seeking only your shelter and care,
The crescent moon in the sky is waning.
O flowing river Cauvery,
Only to be united with you,
My youthful heart sings in joy.
Come, the fragrant jasmine is withering away!
Why is there a delay for you to touch me?
O dove on the courtyard ledge,
Will you go carry a message of love for me?
About my yearning, captivated heart,
Will you whisper it into my beautiful girl's ear?
When shyness glows like ten bright moons,
And your round face turns red, why do we need that useless moon in the sky?
{Oho
Oho} (5)
In this ocean of kisses,
To dive deep for pearls,
After planning it all, why waste time with idle chatter?
For Rama to place the garland on Sita,
This is the auspicious hour to chant the wedding prayers!
Listen to me, my lotus,
Just to look upon your sweet shyness,
I live on as your shining sun!
O joyful sun,
Only to unite with you,
This lotus blooms with delight!
I have completely given myself to you here,
Trust me, my beautiful girl!
O dove on the courtyard ledge,
Will you go carry a message of love for me?
About my yearning, captivated heart,
Will you whisper it into my sweetheart's ear?
To drape a garment of pouring kisses,
To build a fence around the cashew grove,
To tie the wedding knot for this longing little bird, oh...
O dove on the courtyard ledge,
Will you go carry a message of love for me?
About my yearning, captivated heart,
Will you whisper it into my beautiful girl's ear?

Beyond the translation

Overall song meaning

'Mutrathu Maada Puraa' from the 1995 Tamil film 'Periya Kudumbam' is a playful and romantic duet where two lovers express their deep affection through rural and nature imagery. The song opens with a plea to a courtyard pigeon to act as a love messenger ('Thoodhu') to carry romantic whispers to the beloved. The lovers teasingly question why there should be any delay in tying the sacred wedding knot ('Thaali'). As the song progresses, the lovers compare their connection to the inseparable relationship between water and root, as well as the timeless bond between Lord Rama and Sita. They playfully exchange metaphors comparing the heroine's blushing face to multiple moons and the hero to a sun that exists only to bring out the bloom in his lotus-like beloved.
