Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

Muthirai Ippodhu is a playful and romantic duet from the 1993 Tamil film Uzhaippali, featuring music composed by Ilaiyaraaja and lyrics written by Vaali. The song portrays a dynamic exchange between a wealthy woman (played by Roja) and an honest, self-respecting working-class man (played by Rajinikanth). The heroine teases and tries to woo the hero, while the hero resists her advances, citing the stark social and economic divide between them. Through witty banter, the heroine expresses her unyielding affection while the hero insists on maintaining his dignity and principles, refusing to succumb to wealth or temptation. Ultimately, the song blends romantic tension with social commentary on class disparity.

Trivia

The song 'Muthirai Ippodhu' was composed by Ilaiyaraaja and sung by S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and K. S. Chithra for the Rajinikanth-starrer Uzhaippali (1993). The movie marked a major comeback for Rajinikanth after a brief dispute with distributor associations, resulting in the film being produced directly by the Tamil Film Producers Council.
