Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

This eccentric and energetic song from 'Kaadhal' captures the raw, disorienting impact of falling hopelessly in love. The protagonist uses hyperbolic folk metaphors to describe his physical and mental state—feeling dazed, bent like a bow, acting restless like a spellbound animal, and wide awake at night like an owl or bat. The lyrics express how love strips away one's normal sanity and composure, replacing it with an intoxicating frenzy.

Writing craft

Poetic devices

Simile (Upamai)

Kuliki potta soliya pola

Compares the protagonist's helpless state to cowrie shells rolled out in a game ('Kuliki potta soliya pola') and a spellbound goat ('Manthiricha aata polae').

Onomatopoeia (Erattai Kilavi / Anukaranai)

Kiru.. kiru.. kiru vena

Uses rhythmic echo words like 'Kiru kiru' (dizzy spin) and 'Thiru thiru' (confused blinking) to reflect physical sensations.

Anaphora and Echo Chorus

Female :Azhaiyura

The male lead describes an action in first person, followed immediately by the female chorus echoing the verb in second person ('Azhaiyuren' -> 'Azhaiyura').

Hyperbole (Uyarvu Navortchi)

Paathiratha mulunguren

Exaggerates intense hunger and passion by claiming he would swallow the whole serving dish if she consents.

Trivia

Composed by Joshua Sridhar for his debut film 'Kaadhal' (2004), directed by Balaji Sakthivel and produced by Shankar. The song 'Kiru Kiru' stands out for its unorthodox vocal delivery and rustic rhythm track featuring chorus echo responses, which vividly matched the raw, realistic tone of the film.
