Lower your eyes a little,
The Queen has arrived!
My dancing Queen,
Comes here to dance!
Come, come, come dance the Ghoomar (Rajasthani folk dance)!
Won't you come and dance the Ghoomar?
As you swirl and spin your slender waist,
As you dance away, stealing my heart,
My heart beats in your hands,
It spins and spins, O Queen!
As anklets sing, bangles chime, and touches make music,
Let my whole world melt away!
Come, come, come dance the Ghoomar!
Come, come, come dance the Ghoomar!
Drummer, beat the drums for Ghoomar,
So I can dance the Ghoomar, Ghoomar, Ghoomar!
Chorus: As the Queen dances the Ghoomar,
Let us dance along with her!
What the tempo of the rhythm is,
My dancing body will show today!
Seeing me dance the Ghoomar,
He too begins to join the beat!
Drummer, beat the drums for Ghoomar,
So I can dance the Ghoomar, Ghoomar, Ghoomar!
Chorus: As the Queen dances the Ghoomar,
Let us dance along with her!
Won't you come, my King?
He became a glowing lamp throughout my body,
Bringing Diwali (festival of lights) inside my soul!
He filled my whole life with colors,
And I became a rangoli (colorful pattern)!
In you, I found my shelter,
And saw my whole being glow with joy,
As I sing out in gratitude,
And float and dance like a cloud!
Drummer, beat the drums for Ghoomar,
So I can dance the Ghoomar, Ghoomar, Ghoomar!
Chorus: As the Queen dances the Ghoomar,
Let us dance along with her!
Come, come, come, come, come, come, come, come!
Come and dance the Ghoomar!
Come, come, won't you come?
Come and dance the Ghoomar!
Like a cloud veiling the moon,
Hiding your eyes behind a veil,
Come, spinning round and round and round,
Melting every heart!
Sister-in-law, come and dance!
Bring Aunt along as well!
Little sister, come and dance!
Come dance like a Queen!
Ghoomar, Ghoomar, Ghoomar,
To dance the Ghoomar, Ghoomar, Ghoomar!
Ghoomar, Ghoomar, Ghoomar,
To dance the Ghoomar, Ghoomar, Ghoomar!
Ghoomar, Ghoomar, Ghoomar,
To dance the Ghoomar, Ghoomar, Ghoomar!
Ghoomar, Ghoomar, Ghoomar,
To dance the Ghoomar, Ghoomar, Ghoomar!
Ghoomar, Ghoomar, Ghoomar,
To dance the Ghoomar, Ghoomar, Ghoomar!
Like a droplet on a lotus leaf,
Gliding smoothly as you dance!
Ghoomar, Ghoomar, Ghoomar,
To dance the Ghoomar, Ghoomar, Ghoomar!
Like a spinning top that never falls,
Whirling and twirling in dance!
This is my humble effort,
Please forgive any mistakes,
Thank you...

Beyond the translation

Overall song meaning

The song 'Goomar' (Ghoomar) from Padmaavat is a traditional Rajasthani folk celebration adapted into Tamil. It captures Queen Padmavati's graceful, ecstatic dance in front of her husband, King Ratan Singh, and her royal court. Through continuous spinning and delicate footwork, she expresses her reverence, devotion, and profound happiness in her marriage.

Poetic devices

Metaphor

En ullil deepavali / Naan aanen rangoli

The singer metaphorically equates her inner joy to Deepavali (the festival of lights) and herself to a colorful rangoli created by her husband's presence.

Simile (Uvamaani)

Thamari mel oru neer thuli Polae nee urundodi aada

Compares the fluid, graceful movement of the dancer to a drop of water rolling effortlessly on a lotus leaf.

Simile (Uvamaani)

bambaram pola Nee suzhandrodi aada

Compares the continuous, swift twirling of the Ghoomar dancer to a spinning top ('bambaram').

Monai (Initial Rhyme / Alliteration)

Ilaitha idai suzhatri suzhatri neeyaada / En idhyam parithau sendru neeyaada

The initial sounds 'Ilaitha' and 'En idhyam' create a rhythmic alliterative pattern in the lines.

Trivia

The original Hindi song 'Ghoomar' was composed by director Sanjay Leela Bhansali himself and became a massive cultural hit. Shreya Ghoshal sang the lead vocals for the Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions as well. The song features traditional Rajasthani Ghoomar dance moves, where Deepika Padukone performed over 66 twirls while wearing a heavily embellished traditional lehenga weighing over 20 kg.
