Aahaa, tying a bow made of sugarcane
Fitting an arrow made of flowers
Instigating desire and passion
Our king, our ruler
Darling Manmadhan, the god of love
And Rathi with her small, beautiful eyes
I have come to sing their story, oh brother, oh brother!
Tying a bow made of sugarcane
Fitting an arrow made of flowers
Instigating desire and passion
Our king, our ruler
Darling Manmadhan, the god of love
And Rathi with her small, beautiful eyes
I have come to sing their story, oh brother, oh brother!
Aahaa, the one who belongs to the southern land
The ruler and king of everyone
That Lord Shiva who possesses three eyes
How Manmadhan was reduced to ashes
We have come to sing that story
Sit down attentively with an open heart, my son, my son!

Goddess Rathi came after applying kohl to her eyes

And Manmadhan, completely enchanted and mesmorized
Went along with her
With both eyes getting dazed and swooning
He surrendered completely to love
And Manmadhan, completely enchanted and mesmorized
Went along with her
With both eyes getting dazed and swooning
He surrendered completely to love

Rathi is indeed the authority when it comes to love

According to the request of thirty-three crore celestial beings
In order to disturb the penance of Lord Shiva
To interrupt Lord Shiva's intense meditation
Manmadhan agreed to take up the task
Mounting his sugarcane bow and loading his floral arrows
He aimed and shot those floral arrows
Directly at Lord Shiva
His meditation was broken
And that Shiva woke up from his trance
And fell into the net of desire
Focusing his attention upon Uma, who forms half of his body
With full attention
He embraced her in the art of love
His meditation was broken
And that Shiva woke up from his trance
And fell into the net of desire
Focusing his attention upon Uma, who forms half of his body
He embraced her in the art of love
Troubled slightly in his mind
Realizing his mistake and lapse
Shiva grieved deeply in regret
His heart suffered in extreme regret
Sparks flew and fire burst from his eyes
Shiva determined to burn down Manmadhan
He opened his third eye on his forehead
Rathi, who once stood like a gentle, solitary peacock
Transformed into a fierce storm
Taking a new form and altering her shape
Rathi, who was once like a tiny little parrot
Turned into a fierce tigress
Today her state has transformed completely
Rathi, who once stood like a gentle, solitary peacock
Transformed into a fierce storm
Taking a new form and altering her shape
Rathi, who was once like a tiny little parrot
Turned into a fierce tigress

Seeing the terrible cruelty of her young partner being burnt down
Overcome by grief at his destruction
As her loved husband vanished into thin air
Overcoming her grief to seek vengeance
Against Lord Shiva, whom no one dares to question
She mustered courage to demand justice
To make the ruler feel the magnitude of his crime
Rathi set out to obtain justice
Making the supreme king realize his state
Determined Rathi set off all by herself
Determined Rathi set off all by herself
She dared to demand justice
Rathi set off to emerge victorious
She dared to demand justice

Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
This song narrates the mythological tale of Manmadhan (Kamadeva, the god of love) and his consort Rathi, centered around the event of Shiva's penance. At the request of thirty-three crore Devas, Manmadhan fires floral arrows at Lord Shiva to disrupt his deep meditation so that he unites with Goddess Parvati. Upon being struck, Shiva's trance breaks and he briefly embraces Parvati, but upon realizing the disruption, Shiva opens his third eye in fury and burns Manmadhan to ashes. The second half of the song highlights Rathi's transformation from a gentle, parrot-like figure into a fierce tigress as she boldly sets out to confront Lord Shiva and demand justice for her fallen husband.
