She touched me,
She stoked the wick.
I lost myself.
On an early misty night in the month of Margazhi,
I burned myself.
She touched me,
She stoked the wick.
I lost myself.
On an early misty night in the month of Margazhi,
I burned myself.
She touched me,
She stoked the wick.
I lost myself.
On an early misty night in the month of Margazhi,
I burned myself.
Running along the edge of her lips,
I fell into her smile.
The ladder that is her long hair,
Holding onto it, I rose up.
Swaying in the breeze that drifts away,
I dissolved into her breath.
This is enough, this is enough,
I have lived my full life.
In my dark night, your bright sun—
Why did you make it burn?
In my gentle dreams, your moons—
Why did you let them scorch?
In my garden, your beautiful flowers—
Why did you let them shed?
A castle made of sand inside the mind—
Why did you sculpt it?
Into my surrounding air, your breath—
Why did you send it over?
To make a body live without its soul,
Why then did you lift me up?

Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
The song portrays a lover caught in a vortex of intense passion, surrender, and emotional turbulence. In the initial verses, the protagonist describes how his lover's gentle touch ignited his inner flame during a cold Margazhi night, causing him to lose himself in her smile, hair, and breath. The subsequent lines capture the poignant anguish of separation and love's mystery, questioning why she brought warmth, dreams, and hope into his life only to leave him feeling soul-less and longing.
Writing craft

Repeated use of 'Edharkaaga' (Why/For what reason) at the start of alternate rhetorical questions to highlight anguish.
