Song interpretation
In this soulful song from the 1944 film 'Harichandra', King Harichandra pours out his heart in prayer to God Shiva (Paraabaran). Having sacrificed his kingdom, crown, wealth, and status to uphold truthfulness at all costs, he suffers extreme humiliation and grief. He recounts how his beloved wife Chandramathi and son Devadasan were sold into slavery to a holy Brahmin, while he himself was forced to become a graveyard guard—a role metaphorically described as an executioner's trade. Plunged into deep sorrow, Harichandra begs the Almighty for the grace to keep meditating on Him despite all suffering, questioning if such extreme trials are appropriate for maintaining physical existence while walking the path of righteousness.
