Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

This song expresses deep romantic longing, emotional yearning, and spiritual connection between two lovers. The protagonist feels completely empty without their beloved, describing how small moments of separation feel like agonizing ages (yugas). Everyday sensations like rain and gentle breezes evoke vivid memories of the beloved, who appears whenever eyes are closed but disappears upon opening them. The lyrics highlight how distance and separation serve to deepen mutual understanding and bring souls closer together. Using rich musical imagery, the protagonist compares their relationship to music and the melody of a veena—asserting that music is incomplete without its variations, just as life is incomplete without the lover. Ultimately, the song celebrates complete surrender and total union, declaring the lover to be the protagonist's very breath, vision, and existence.
