Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

The song 'Jinn' captures the frustration, heartbreak, and existential monotony felt by an isolated individual navigating a lonely phase in life. Describing his daily existence as colorless and void of peace, the protagonist compares his state to a kite grounded without wind, unable to soar or find companionship. Toward the conclusion, the narrative undergoes an uplifting shift, comforting the protagonist with the message that tough times are merely temporary and that one's hard work and tears ('sweat of the eyes') will eventually shine like diamonds.

Writing craft

Poetic devices

Iyaibu (End Rhyme)

Alanjaachu tholanjaachu / Vazhkaye black and white aachu

Multiple lines repeatedly end with the suffix '-aachu' (Alanjaachu, tholanjaachu, iruttaachu, kaduppaachu, kalanjaachu), building a rhythmic flow of despair.

Metaphor

Kannoda verva / Oru naalil vairama maarume

Describing tears metaphorically as 'sweat of the eyes' (Kannoda verva) and asserting they will turn into precious 'diamonds' (vairam) to symbolize valuable future success.

Simile

Kaatheh illama / Verum pattama kedakkiren naan

The protagonist compares his helpless and stranded situation to a paper kite lying motionless due to lack of wind.

Oxymoron / Contrast

Pagalellam iruttaachu

Contrasting daytime (Pagal) with total darkness (iruttaachu) to emphasize emotional gloom during bright hours.
