Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
This classic song from 'Pattanathil Bhootham' (1967) uses allegorical devotion to Lord Murugan (referred to as Sivakami's son, Saravanan, and Velan) to express deep romantic longing and marital commitment. The heroine asks her friend to send word to her lover, equating her devotion to him with a devotee's worship of Murugan. She asserts that just as a peacock feather has no identity without Velan, her life has no meaning without her beloved. The song transitions into a duet of mutual commitment where both lovers reassure each other that changes in time, social status, or circumstances will never diminish their love. They swear by God that their affection is immutable, culminating in a celebration of their eternal union.
Writing craft
Poetic devices
Metaphor (Uruvam)
“Velan illaamal thogai yedhadi”
Comparing the lovers to 'Velan' (Lord Murugan) and 'Thogai' (Peacock feather), showing their intrinsic interdependence.
Allegory (Bhakti-Sringara Thotram)
“Sivakami maganidam sedhi solladi ennai serum naal paarka cholladi”
Kannadasan expertly blends divine devotion (Bhakti) to Lord Murugan with romantic desire (Sringara), addressing the mortal lover as Sivakami's son.
Edhukai (Second Letter Rhyme)
“Malaiyin Santhanam ... / Nilaiyil Maarinaal ...”
The second letter 'la' rhymes across successive lines ('Malaiyin' / 'Nilaiyil').
Anaphora / Epizeuxis (Repetition for Emphasis)
“Maaradhu maaradhu iraivan aanai”
Repetition of 'Maaradhu' emphasizes the absolute permanence and constancy of true love.
