Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

This song serves as a traditional folk ballad narration (Villu Paattu style intro) setting up the legendary epic of 'Ponnar Shankar' (the Annanmar Kathai). The narrator calls upon the villagers to gather, garland the venue with turmeric and mango leaves, and listen reverently to the true historical legend of the twin hero-brothers Ponnar and Shankar. The song recounts the historical rivalry, the pregnancy of their mother Thamarai Naacchi, and how jealous enemies and an evil priest conspired with a wicked midwife to murder the unborn heirs upon birth.

Writing craft

Poetic devices

Mōnai (Initial Alliteration)

Paadhagar koottam ellaam / Pazhi vaanga onnu saerndhu / Paavi andha poosaari

Repetition of the initial 'Pa' sound across consecutive words creates a strong rhythmic cadence typical of Tamil folk storytelling.

Edukai (Second-letter Rhyme)

Annammaaru kadhaiya solla poren / Annan thambimaarae

The second consonant 'n' matches in consecutive lines (Annammaaru / Annan), binding the verses harmoniously.

Uvamaani (Metaphor & Imagery)

Pacha elam kurutha pinju pera nelava

The newborn infants are poetically compared to delicate natural imagery such as green sprouts, crescent moons, coral, and dewy blossoms.
