For whom?
For whom is this for?
This palace,
This spring palace,
A portrait of love,
Is now a ruined palace.
For whom?
For whom is this for?
Go away, oh love, go away!
Come, oh death, come!
A messenger of death
Has arrived,
It arrived disguised
In the form of a woman.
What I believed to be
A blissful heaven,
Has today turned
Into a living hell.
For whom?
For whom is this for?
It was only a flower
That my hand plucked,
So why did it land on thorns?
It was only togetherness
That I longed for, so why
Did separation come and claim me?
Inscribe this
Upon my tombstone:
"She was a woman without mercy."
Sing this at my tombstone:
"This man was driven mad!"
That which the eyes paint
And call love,
Only brings tears into the eyes.
The affection shown by women
Turns us into madmen and makes us wander aimlessly.
For whom?
From where did this
Bond of love arrive?
And today, from where did this
Poison creep in?
From up above,
The Almighty controller,
Directs this daily theatrical drama!

Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
This heart-wrenching song from the classic movie Vasantha Maligai captures the deep existential grief and heartbreak of the protagonist whose dream of a happy life with his beloved has collapsed. Having built a literal and symbolic 'palace of spring' (Vasantha Maaligai) for his love, he finds himself betrayed by fate, viewing the woman he loved as a messenger of death who transformed his heavenly world into hell.

Poetic devices
Muran (Antithesis)
“Kaadhalae po po / Saathalae vaa vaa”

Metaphor (Uruvagam)
“Kaadhal oviyam kalaintha maaligai”
Compares love to an intricate painting ('oviyam') that has been smudged or ruined inside the palace.
Muran (Antithesis)
“Sorgamaaga naan ninaithadhu indru naragamaga maari vittathu”
Contrasts heaven ('Sorgam') and hell ('Naragam') to convey the drastic reversal of his fortune.
Iyaipu (Rhyme)
“Malarai thaanae ... Uravai thaanae”
Matching end sounds in parallel lyric structures ('Malarai thaanae' / 'Uravai thaanae') creating a melodic rhythm.
