doesn't care at all.
Chorus: Doesn't care at all.
All this Chokkan needs
is a potful of food...
Chorus: A potful of food...
Male: All that he needs
is a bottle of liquor...
Chorus: A bottle of liquor.

Male: And about the town, he

Chorus: Doesn't care at all.
There is life left in me,
but no money to spend.
If a coin is placed on a corpse's forehead,
it is no crime to take it.
To the temple of Ganesha,
pots and pots of milk are offered, aren't they?
If someone drinks a pot of that milk,
God suffers no loss.
If you steal for luxury,
Chorus: that is a crime.
Male: But if you steal to fill your belly,
Chorus: what wrong is there?
Thanthana thanthaana thanthana thanthaana
Thanthaanaa ha haah
Chorus: Thanthana thanthaana thanthana
Thanthaana thanthaana
About anyone at all, he has

Male: ...
A honeybee gathers honey and stores it
inside the hive.
If anyone takes that honey,
no one calls it theft.
The money that men gave her,
she tucked away inside her blouse.
He just grabbed what she kept hidden,
there is nothing wrong in that!
Differences of caste and religion,
he has none of that.
Chorus: He has none of that.
Male: By the law, he doesn't even have a name.
Chorus: Doesn't even have a name.
Thanthana thanthaana thanthana thanthaana
Thanthaanaa thaana thaanaa

Beyond the translation

Overall song meaning

This song introduces the rough, lawless character of the protagonist (Sitha, played by R. Parthiban). He lives on the fringes of society, completely indifferent to societal norms, rules, caste, or religious distinctions. He rationalizes his petty thefts and ruthless behavior through folk philosophy—arguing that stealing out of basic survival and hunger is fundamentally different from stealing for luxury.

Writing craft

Poetic devices

Ethugai (Second Letter Rhyme)

Vasathhikku thirudiputtaa / Vayaththukku thirudi thinnaa

The second letter 'sa'/'ya' sound matching creates a natural poetic rhythm when contrasting stealing for comfort versus stealing for hunger.

Monai (Initial Letter Alliteration)

Sokkanukku thevai ellam / Satti alavu

The repeating 'S' sound in Sokkanukku and Satti enhances the rhythmic flow of the folk verse.

Analogy

Thenee thaeneduththu seththu vaikkuthu... Thiruttunnu sonnathilla

The lyricist draws an analogy between humans taking honey from bees and a thief taking money, questioning the moral boundaries defined by society.
