Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
This song expresses the deep agony and longing of Majnu (Qays) for his beloved Laila in the classic tragic romance Laila Majnu (1950). Stranded in an ocean of distress, the protagonist desperately asks who will go to the place where his beloved—whom he affectionally calls his sweet parrot—resides and deliver the message of his tragic state. He recalls how captivated he was by her spear-sharp eyes, to the point of forgetting his trade, his learning, and time itself, standing frozen like a statue. He laments how their childhood promises of togetherness and joy seem to have been forgotten by her, while he languishes away in intense longing and sorrow.

Poetic devices
Metaphor (Rupaka Alankaram)
“Sanjala kadalilae”
'Sanjala kadal' metaphorically compares grief and distress to a vast ocean in which the lover is drowning.
Metaphor (Uvamai)
“Ennuyirkiniya antha paingili”
'Paingili' (green parrot) is used as a metaphor/term of endearment for his beloved Laila.
Wordplay / Pun (Yamakam / Sledai)
“Velai pazhikkum... Vel thaikka naan seiyyum Velai maranthen”
Plays on the homonyms 'Vel' (spear) and 'Velai' (work/occupation or time). Her eyes surpass the sharp spear ('vel'), causing him to forget his work ('velai') of forging spears.
Simile (Uvamaani)
“Silai polae irunthaenendru”
Compares his frozen, spellbound state of being to an unmoving statue ('silai polae').
