Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

This poem by Mahakavi Subramanya Bharathiyar is written in the traditional Tamil genre of 'Kili Thoodhu' (Parrot Messenger). The heroine addresses a companion parrot, asking if it possesses the eloquence and ability to deliver a heartfelt message to her divine beloved, Lord Murugan. She reminisces about intimate past moments shared with him—standing near a lily pond during twilight by a jasmine plant, and strolling hand-in-hand through a tranquil grove. She asks the parrot to remind Murugan of these tender encounters and the enchanting, wondrous promises he uttered at the time. She pleads for him to return, unite with her, and fill her life with divine bliss once more.
