In an era when Buddhism took deep root in India,
There lived a queen of dance in Pataliputra.
With her alluring form unveiled,
Vasavadatta was a sculpted statue of beauty.
I became an idol worshipped by kings,
An art form that captivated every heart.
Longing for the charm of my eyes,
Yearning to share my bed,
Intoxicated by thoughts of me,
I became an idol worshipped by kings.
I would thrill them with the sweet nectar of my lips,
And drown them in brimming cups of wine.
I made every fleeting pleasure blossom,
I made every fleeting pleasure blossom,
And made them swear that no other woman compares.
I became an idol worshipped by kings.
I take refuge in the Buddha,
I take refuge in the Sangha (the Buddhist monastic community),
I take refuge in the Dharma (the cosmic truth and teachings).
Those kings are mere slaves to me,
But this young man is truly handsome!
My eyes go wandering in search of him,
And my heart follows close behind.
Why shouldn't I go to him myself?
My eyes have gazed upon your handsome form,
And discovered a sage of deep wisdom.
You have awakened the boundless woman within me,
And revealed the true nature of pleasure.
What the eyes behold is an illusion,
And romantic love is the greatest illusion of all.
The beauty of womanhood is fleeting,
And the words spoken are untrue.
Behold the radiant face of a beautiful woman,
Taste the joy that is filled with love,
Enjoy the soft bed, the milk, and the fruit—
For wisdom can still follow after knowing all of this.
I am calling you, holy one, I am calling you!
Sensual pleasure calls to you;
The Buddha has no business here!
Earthly desire calls to you;
A monk has no business here!
Let the right time call, and let her eyes truly see;
I will come to you, woman, I will come.
She danced on and on;
Through hot summers and blooming springs,
Through freezing winters and pouring rains,
Unaware of the passing seasons as time slipped away,
She danced with her mind, she danced with her body,
She danced all alone until she staggered and fell.
Her youth was gone, her beauty was lost;
Who will look for me now?
Who will ever come looking for me now?
I take refuge in the Buddha,
I take refuge in the Sangha (the Buddhist monastic community),
I take refuge in the Dharma (the cosmic truth and teachings).
When I was a blooming flower and called for you,
You never came, holy one.
Have you come now just to see a fallen flower?
I told you that love was an illusion,
But you did not pay attention.
I told you that beauty was an illusion,
But you did not understand.
Before realising it is all an illusion,
Pleasure-seekers will flock to you, mother.
Only after realising it is an illusion,
Will the truly wise come to you, mother.
