Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

This sequence from Kattradhu Thamizh captures the protagonist Prabhakar's descent into psychological trauma, isolation, and delusional moral justification driven by intense love, grief, and societal rejection. Wandering through darkness and neglect, he reflects on his agonizing existence where physical pain is his only proof of life, comparing himself to a tree that realizes its suffering only when set on fire. In his unhinged state, he converses with his lost love Anandhi, taking solace in drugs and convincing himself that he has elevated to the stature of Lord Shiva—a deity possessing authority over life and death. Acting on his twisted idealization of love, he commits brutal acts of crime to procure gifts for his beloved, justifying his violence under the divine pretext that a god commits no crime.
