Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

Enni Irundhadhu Eedera from the 1981 film Andha 7 Naatkal is a playful romantic duet between an aspiring music composer and his beloved. The hero sings about how he struggled for two years to find a new musical melody, only to realize that hearing his lover's voice provided the immediate missing note. In return, the heroine playfully admits that listening to his soulful singing distracted her so thoroughly that she forgot to string actual jasmine blossoms onto her thread.

Writing craft

Poetic devices

Edukai (Second-letter Rhyme)

Enni irundhadhu eedera / Kanni manam indru soodera

The second letters 'n' in 'Enni' and 'Kanni' match, creating a traditional Tamil lyrical rhyme.

Metaphor (Uruvagham)

Metti chatham mettu sandham

The clinking sound of toe-rings ('metti chatham') is metaphorically compared to musical beats ('mettu sandham').

Hyperbole (Uyarvu Navitchi)

Unn paata kettu kerangi poyi / Naarathanae mudinjen

A playful exaggeration where the heroine claims she was so mesmerized by his song that she tied empty plant fibers without noticing she missed the flowers.
