my father came to Chennai,

and after signing away the property and leaving,

for five or six long years,

without seeing your beloved face,

your son's heart went mad with longing—

did a mother's heart really turn to stone?

Back when we had all the love,

we had no money.

When the money finally arrived,

that love could not be found.

When our village drowned in the Vaigai river,

as the floodwaters rose all around,

holding me tightly by the hand,

you brought me safely to the shore.
