Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

This song is a deeply romantic and devotional piece centered on the theme of Nayaka-Nayaki Bhava (the soul longing for the divine lover), expressed through the eternal love story of Radha and Krishna. The narrator gently comforts Radha, who is filled with anxiety, longing, and subtle frustration over Krishna's delay. Radha is reassured that Krishna's love is absolute and that as night falls, his magical flute music will draw him to her.

Poetic devices

Monai (Alliteration)

Murali madhanan iravil varuvaandi

Repetition of the initial letter 'M' in 'Murali' and 'madhanan'.

Gangaiyum yamunaiyum sangamamaavathu

The confluence of the sacred rivers Ganga and Yamuna serves as a metaphor for the union of divine lovers.

Ethugai (Second-letter Rhyme)

Mogana mangala gaanam arnthavan / Aayiram manthiram thanthiram kattravan

The second consonant sound 'th' in 'manthiram' and 'thanthiram' forms a rhythmic scheme across the verse.
